Collecting coins is an engaging and fascinating hobby and to serious collectors, it is often a lifetime passion. Not only do coins have monetary value, but they also have intrinsic historical and aesthetic values. Many collectors are hobbyists who accumulate their special series of coins purely based on interests, and many are also investors who amass their coin collections as an investment to be traded based on the supply and demand market principle.

Regardless of one's motivation, collectors often share a deep passion, appreciation and knowledge about their collections and some would invest a significant amount in their finds.

There are numerous theme collections available to the collector, be it by country, year, mint mark, subject, period, copy and volume. For example, one may be a specialized collector for Roman coins minted during the reign of the Emperor Julius Caesar. A collector's interest is boundless and often one's quest can reap a pocketful of rewards.

Rewards for the Hobbyist

Certainly the greatest reward for the hobbyist lies in the process of gathering information about a certain coin - reading about its story, its price and value and its design. One well-quoted example is the interesting story behind the bare-breasted Standing Liberty Quarter produced in 1916 when America was at war. Although the design was halted and 're-modified' right after the quarters were circulated due to public protests, these rare quarters can certainly be a treasure of rewards to any hobbyist.

Hobbyists also find that networking with like-minded souls a very rewarding experience. As coins bring people together through websites, magazines and coin clubs, hobbyists find themselves among a close-knit community that share similar passion and knowledge.

Rewards for the Investor

Without a doubt, the primary reward for the investor is getting a good return investment for one's prized collection. The main question is being able to identify which coin to invest in and understanding the market value of certain coins or coin sets. It often takes a long time to complete a coin set collection depending on the rarity of the set and its availability. Good networking and constant updated research are keys to a collector's find.

A remarkable story was listed in a coin website shared by a collector, Lelan Rogers, who spent months tracking down two rare coins to complete his United States Type Set, a 1796 and a 1797 half dollars, which he finally purchased and kept in his collection for 27 years. The two coins were later auctioned off for over $800,000, more than 30 times their purchase value.

Some rewards are monetary, but the most valuable reward is the victory of finally possessing that one last coin to complete a collection set.
