How many people have you heard lately exclaim that pennies are worthless, and generally discard their spare change as useless? Saving change is not only a smart thing to do these days, but their hidden value can often make money for you if you know what to look for. A little education can go a long way, and the ability to turn a penny into two cents just by having a little knowledge is well worth the investment of using your brain.
Pennies are now being measured by their melt value, and all pennies coined between 1909-1982 are worth a little over two cents each due to their copper value. If you save up these pennies you can sell them by the pound and make double their face value. This is an easy way to make money for doing nothing but separating your old pennies from your new ones.
Nickels are not worth much more than their face value, unless they are older than 1950, then their can be some collectible value to them. Also, Any nickel coined from 1940-1945 that has a big "P" mint mark on it is a "war nickel" and is made of silver. These coins are worth the silver melt value, which is currently over a dollar!
Dimes are all worth their face value unless they are minted in 1964 or before. These dimes are ninety percent silver and worth over a dollar as well due to their silver melt value. These coins are bonafide investment material, and should not be spent. Your ability to make money by just saving your value coins is easy.
Quarters are the same as dimes, as anything minted in 1964 or before is ninety percent silver. These quarters are worth nearly four dollars in their silver value, and should be saved as well. Finding an older quarter is beginning to reach that level that can really start making a difference in investment potential. Half dollars minted in 1964 or before are worth their silver value as well which is about double that of the quarter.
No matter what you decide to do with your spare change, you should never discount the value of your coins. There may be an easy way to make money with them, and can also become a bit of a hobby for you if you take a few minutes each day to look through your change before you just throw it in that jar or coffee can you have sitting around.
