When it comes to getting through the fourth grade, very few students are able to escape the dreaded fourth grade science fair project. This single project could make up a large percentage of your student's grade for the quarter and semester, and a failure could doom their chances of getting back to a passing grade. In addition, parent's must also consider that failing students are often held back a year, or put into remedial classes because of these grades. That is a very bad place to be for students, particularly if they know their stuff, but simply failed to produce a quality project. So the question is, of course, what kinds of projects are good for your young students to attempt?
Fortunately, there is a very simple answer. You, the parent, need to take stock of what your student's teachers require of the assignment. This is the first step because ultimately, they may have different requirements from the norm, and because they're the ones who decide the grade your student will ultimately receive. Some teachers do not like students to create and research models, because there is no real experimentation aspect to this process. Contact your student's teacher as soon as it is assigned, and they may be able to give you guidance on how he or she expects the project to be completed, which can give you some ideas.
The second step is to realize that you need not go out and create something unique and totally spectacular. The fourth grade science fair project is a project for fourth graders after all. Thus, it is fine to use a project you find on the internet or in a book. The only caution here is that you should probably avoid doing any of the projects from your student's textbook, as there is a high probability of having multiple students who repeat the same project.
Finally, you should make sure to help your student through the majority of the steps in the process. It is probably well beyond the ability of your students to handle the entire project on their own, even when it is broken into parts and fed to them. Be an active participant, and you an ensure success on your child's fourth grade science fair project.
