Before I start talking about vanishing coin tricks, I'd like to talk about vanishes in general. There are three ways to create the illusion that something disappears. First, you can move the object. For example, you think the coin is in my left hand, but really, it's in my right.
Secondly, you can hide the object. For example, imagine that there are two mirrors inside a box, reflecting its sides. If those sides are painted the same way as the back, then the audience will think they're seeing straight through the box! Thus, if anything is behind those mirrors, it will be effectively hidden. In theory, the hand your spectators don't think the coin is in "hides" it, as well.
The third way to vanish an object only works outside, with objects too big to fit onto a conventional stage. Though rare, sometimes magicians, rather than move the object, move the entire audience!
The Finger Palm
Our first way to vanish a coin is a combination of moving and hiding. Before we learn it, though, we need to learn something else. That "Something else" is called The Finger Palm. To execute the finger palm, the hand is held loosely in such a way that the fingers are naturally curled. The coin rests at the base of the second and third fingers. Because of the curl of the fingers, the coin will not fall out, and the hand looks natural.
Once you've mastered that, you can add a "convincer" called the "Ramsay subtlety." Curl your fingers in a tad further, and point your first finger up, displaying your empty palm to the spectators. Because your spectators see your empty palm, they think your whole hand is empty. Of course, you shouldn't draw attention to this, and it should be done under the cover of some natural gesture.
The French Drop
Now for the vanish: This move is actually the foundation for several vanishing coin tricks. It's the most basic false transfer of a coin. Despite the fact that I now know many more "sophisticated" methods, it remains my favorite. Done correctly it's extremely convincing, and I'll explain why. First, though, let me teach you the move.
Hold the coin between the tips of your right thumb and fingers. The left hand approaches the coin. The thumb goes behind it. The closed fingers go in front of it. Next, three things things happen at the same time. The right thumb moves up, releasing the coin and allowing it to fall into a right hand finger palm. The left hand closes into a fist. Finally, your right hand turns over to the left as the left hand moves away, apparently holding the coin.
As the left hand moves away, your eyes follow it. This is another important principle of misdirection. The audience will watch what you watch. They'll also watch what moves. Those two principles serve to rivet the spectator's attention on your (empty) left hand. The brief glimpse of empty space that the spectators see between your right fingers and thumb where the coin once was is the other factor that makes this false transfer so convincing. The French drop can be performed with either hand.
Other Methods
"Shell" coins, like in a "Scotch and Soda" set, are often used to vanish coins, as well. The idea here is that if a "shell" that looks like a coin covers an "insert," that also looks like a coin, then the insert can be made to vanish! Another alternative method for vanishing a coin is to use what magicians call a "Thumb Tip." It's one of those "fake thumbs" you've heard about. They're usually made of either hard plastic, or soft rubber. To vanish a coin you'll need a soft rubber one. This only works with coins up to the size of a U.S. Quarter. Whichever method you choose, enjoy your vanishing coin tricks!
