Causes of Weight Gain In College Freshmen

When you look at it from a bird's-eye view, it seems obvious why students just entering in college might gain weight. 1) Eating at a cafeteria: Most cafeterias are buffet-style, which is a pitfall for many students. When given access to unlimited foods, there is always a tendency to overeat.

2) Increased social events: Social events are a great way to meet other students, but they are also often laden with not-so-healthy food choices

3) Late-night studying: Keeping late-night hours is often a time when snacking occurs, so there are additional chances that extra calories are being consumed.

4) Less exercise: Let's face it, most students are just not disciplined at keeping active and the increased sedentary lifestyle adds to the weight gain.

5) Drinking too much alcohol. College parties are an integral part of student life. Along with parties comes alcohol. For college freshmen, an increase in alcohol intake means an increase in calories, and therefore weight gain.

How To Avoid The Freshman 15

For a college freshman who is already in good shape, the best way to stay in shape is to avoid the pitfalls listed above.

What if you're already a victim of the Freshman 15? The good news is that there are plenty of great ways to get back on the wagon. First, find a program or regimen that fits in with how you live. If you like having structured meals, then find a plan that incorporates meal plans, or a list of low fat foods. Likewise, if you enjoy exercising, choosing a program that incorporates cardiovascular exercise and strength training can be a good way to go. Whatever you choose, you will increase your long-term chances of success by selecting a regimen that you really like.
