The International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) were created by the University of Guelph to address the growing concern over contaminated supplements. After the European Union passed stricter standards for PCB levels and dioxins in foods, a number of different products were temporarily removed from the market.

US limits on PCBs and dioxins are not as strict as those in the EU. In fact, they are relatively non-existent. In 2007, independent testing showed that the supplements provided by a major US manufacturer contained high levels of these cancer-causing toxins. But, the product was not recalled. The company never made an official statement about the report. The company is Omega Protein and the supplement they manufacture is called Omega Pure(TM). According to the Environmental Defense Fund and several other organizations, we should not buy those supplements.

Participation in the International Fish Oil Program is strictly voluntary. Manufacturers are not required to have their products tested by independent laboratories to confirm purity or potency. Many manufacturers claim to conduct their own testing, but the neutrality of those tests is suspect. In order to be sure that the product you are about to order meets the strictest standards for purity, visit the manufacturer's website. They should provide a link to their Certificate of Analysis or COA. It should be current and list the omega3 DHA, EPA and DPA content.

Many fish oils are high in EPA, but low in DHA. Yet, DHA is the most abundant fatty acid in the brain and the back of the eye. In order for the body to convert EPA to DHA, ALA must also be present. ALA is an omega 3 found primarily in flax seed and other vegetable oils. The conversion process is very low and the body will only convert a small amount.

The International Fish Oil Standards do not require a specific amount of omega-3 fatty acids be included in the product. They are strictly concerned about toxic contaminants. But, for those of us that are hoping to see benefits like reduced inflammation, we need to know how much and what type of omega3 is present in the product.

Low levels of DHA in the bloodstream are associated with heart disease, depression, Alzheimer's, imbalanced cholesterol, ADHD and a degenerative eye disease called macular degeneration. It is the primary cause of blindness among the elderly. It has been confirmed by researchers that increasing intake of ALA does not increase blood levels of DHA. Obviously, the body believes that we should be supplying it with the DHA that it needs.

So, when you go shopping, look for a supplement that adheres to the International Fish Oil requirements or has their own higher standards and provides proof of laboratory analysis. Be sure that the product provides a minimum of 430mg of DHA omega3 fats. That's the amount that researchers believe to be most beneficial.

The limits set down by the Council for Responsible Nutrition and the World Health Organization are not as strict as those of the International Fish Oil group. If you want the best, you want IFOS or better.
