Augmented Reality took a big step forward in 2010 and will grow exponentially by 2014. According to ABI Research, the market for augmented reality is expected to reach $350 million in 2014 up from $6 million in 2008.
Today's AR technology has helped brands of all sizes create a unique user experience using web cam and smart phone applications. Lets take a look at some of the more innovative Augmented Reality Marketing campaigns of 2010.
I will list what I found to be some of the most innovative developments of Augmented Reality in 2010. Here they are in no particular order.
1. Adidas Originals AR Game Pack:
Adidas turned the top part of their shoes tongue into an AR code. A web cam held over top of the tongue would trigger interactive games on the Adidas web site.
2. Toyota Scion AR Game
Visit the Scion web site and print out an AR symbol on a piece of paper. You can then use that steeling wheel to play the Scion tC game. Race around in the game and win a spot on the top 100 score board.
3. BMW Z4
Similar to the Scion TC augmented reality game, you can print out a special symbol and use it to drive the Z4 around. Instead of it being in a game you can drive it on your desk. Users could save an image of the Z4 on their desk then share it on social networks.
4. Kit Kat AR
Kit Kat created an augmented reality campaign that used the Kit Kat wrapper. When a customer would hold up the wrapper to their web cam they could unlock a one-off Scouting for Girls performance. The special packs offered customers to win $100's ticket master vouchers.
5. Virtual Mirrors
Cosmetic brands were given special kiosks that would allow women to virtually try on makeup. The mirror observes skin tone, facial features, and makeup. It would then make a product recommendation based on those elements.
