Churchill Ecotourism For Polar Bear
Churchill is a town on the shore of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada. It is most famous for the many polar bears which move to the beach from inland in the autumn. Churchill is referred to as "The Polar Bear Capital of the World", but the bears are not the only attraction. You can explore the arctic tundra along the Hudson Bay coast and venture into the treeline of the vast Boreal forest of the Canadian Shield. A major seaport and railroad stop on the shore of Hudson Bay, Churchill, Manitoba is a four season ecotourism destination, with attractions that include bird watching, beluga whale watching, white bear tours, northern lights, and other activities in its marine, tundra, and boreal forest ecosystems.
Churchill's Polar bears is the world's largest land carnivore and also largest bear, together with the omnivorous Kodiak bear, which is approximately the same size. Churchill, Manitoba is might the only location where you can find polar bears and get with them so close and nearby.
Each year from October through early November, hundreds of polar bears move from the inland area to gather on the immense peninsula. If you visit Churchill during October of November, then you definitely see your fill of polar bears, when upwards of 300 "Lords of the North" wait along the shores of Hudson Bay for the ice to freeze. When the bay freezes, the polar bears can get onto the ice to hunt their favorite meal, the ringed seal.
The polar bear has many individual adaptations for dealing with the Arctic cold. The Polar bear's skin is actually black, which allows it to soak up as much heat as possible from the sun. They are also great swimmers and will swim from ice floe to ice floe. They have been seen swimming 50 miles away from any ice or land. Polar Bear their whole life connected with pack ice. Females may prefer ice along the shoreline while others prefer moving sea ice at the floe edge -usually within 180 miles of shore.
Tours are led by professional naturalists with extensive experience with both the natural and cultural heritage of the Churchill region. Our firm has over 20 years experience in conducting Polar Bear tours to Churchill.
