Plated Coin

Silver proof coins are a work of art produced by a mint with very special qualities and are considered legal tender but they are not intended to be spent. They are worth far more as collectibles than their face value and are considered the Rolls Royce of coins.

There are many types of silver coins other than those in proof sets. They are sold as valuable collectibles and are an excellent way to invest in silver. Mints around the world produce similar coins as well as special commemorative coins which are often used to pay tribute to a special event, milestone, person or anniversary.

If you are a collector of silver coins you know what you should be looking for. For those of you who are just starting to invest, "Proof" refers to the time consuming process used to create each and every coin. If it was not made with the special proof dies and stamped at least twice, it is not a proof coin. Even a poor quality circulated minted coin is still considered a proof coin.

The dies for a new coin are polished by master craftsman under a microscope for a mirror-like finish taking two to three hours to achieve this. The dies stamp the silver coin blanks two or more times to provide extra crisp detail while regular coins are stamped once.

Producing high quality coins is serious business, they are manually and singly coined in an air conditioned environment. Special measures are taken to minimize the risk of imperfections on the coins. Lab coats, hair nets, gloves, special flooring, lint free material for cleaning dies, and air flow are taken into consideration.

If after a thorough inspection if a single fault is found, the entire batch gets a reexamination.

The coins are then treated with nitro-cellulose lacquer to protect against oxidation and packaged with care to maintain the coins integrity.

Silver proof coins are great long term investment and fun to collect.
