Pisidia Antioch

The Apostle Paul was an incredible and extensive traveler. His writings were mainly to churches to which he had visited and these writings are a huge part of The New Testament. Paul is known to have had multiple journeys, however the first may be the most important due to Paul establishing himself as a leader. It starts in Antioch where many Jews became Christians and brought non-Jews into the Christian community. It is in Antioch that followers of Jesus become known as Christians so Antioch initially became a strong base.

In Acts 26 Luke explains the first missionary journey of Paul being led originally by Barnabas and John Mark. The three men sail from Antioch to Cyprus, a large island in the eastern Mediterranean. In Cyprus, Elymas the false prophet criticizes the teachings of Christ. Paul then rebukes Elymas and he becomes temporarily blinded. Due to this miracle Sergius Paullus, the Proconsul of Cyprus under Claudius converts to Christianity. After Cyprus they sail to Pamphylia, a district on the coast of asia minor. There is a dispute at this point and John Mark leaves for Jerusalem. Although Paul was disappointed with John Mark's departure this seems to be God's will for it eventually sets up a double ministry being that Barnabus met up with John Mark in the future. Barnabus and Paul then travel to Antioch (The Antioch near the region of Pisidia).

They enter a synagogue on The Sabbath and Paul gives a powerful sermon. He delivers the message of being saved by grace through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts chapter 13). He explains that those who accept Jesus can be forgiven of all of their sins and have eternal life. He also explains that in Psalms 16:10 King David was not speaking about himself but was speaking about The Lord Jesus Christ in Psalms 16:10. The message had great impact so on the following Sabbath the synagogue in Antioch near the region of Pisidia was jam-packed. The majority of jews do not accept Paul's message, however Paul creates a strong following with the gentiles. Paul and Barnabus then travel to Iconium, Lystra and Derbe. In Iconium many of the jews do accept the teaching, however the ones who do not incite a riot and Paul and Barnabus must leave so they head toward Lystra.

In Lystra Paul heals a crippled man who had never walked. The Greeks now believe that Barnabus and Paul are the living gods Jupiter and Mercurius. Paul tries to explain to them that The True God who created the whole universe was working through him and that it has nothing to do with the idols. The Greeks turn on Paul. They stone him and leave him for dead. It is at this point what Paul writes about in 2nd Corinthians 11:24 to 25 where he is caught up in the third heaven. The disciples are there to meet Paul and are shocked to see him rise as much lesser attacks have killed many men before. Paul is alive and well and continues to preach.

They travel to Derbe and everything goes well in this city as they make many disciples. The first missionary journey of Paul is now complete as they travel back to each city in reverse order. The Apostle Paul proved that he was truly empowered by The Holy Spirit with the blinding of the false prophet, his healing of the crippled man in Lystra, the message of grace he delivered in the synagogues with the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, and his overall courage and resilience in preaching The Gospel.

When the first settlers arrived here in 1850, they could never have guessed that their tiny settlement would one day be home to over 100,000 souls, scores of factories, and the gateway to the California Delta with some of the most productive agricultural lands in the world. In earlier days, the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers were the main routes into the state's interior, as the swampy delta land had yet to be tamed. Antioch and nearby Pittsburg served as major depots for supplies to the Sierra gold fields, stockpiling lumber, produce, hay, dry goods, medicine, and fuel from the Stewartville, Empire, and Judsonville coal mines. Named in 1851 after the biblical city in Syria, this town served for many years as the Bay Area's easternmost outpost and provided its inhabitants with a bounty both man-made and natural.

Alice of Antioch

Alice of Antioch

$79.66

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Alice of Jerusalem was Princess of Antioch through her marriage to Bohemund II. She was the second daughter of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem and Morphia of Melitene. Baldwin II had become regent of Antioch after the defeat of the principality at the Battle of Ager Sanguinis in 1119. In 1126, the 18year old Bohemund, son of Bohemund I, the first prince of Antioch, arrived to claim his inheritance. Immediately after the principality was handed over to him, Bohemund was married to Alice; the marriage was likely part of the negotiations prior to Bohemunds arrival. In 1130 Bohemund was killed in battle with the Danishmends, and Baldwin returned to Antioch to assume the regency, but Alice wanted the city for herself. She attempted to make an alliance with Zengi, the Seljuk atabeg of Mosul and Aleppo, offering to marry her daughter to a Muslim prince. The messenger sent by Alice to Zengi was captured on the way by Baldwin, and was tortured and executed.
