How can you tell the age of antique furniture? Well we will come to that eventually, but to start with an antique only becomes antique when it reaches one hundred years old. Even then it may not be worth a fortune depending on how many were made and how many are still in existence.
The more common the piece of furniture the less demand there is so you can quite often get hold of this type of antique furniture quite cheaply.
If you have items of furniture in your home that you think may be antique because they look old, then look through catalogues and books to determine if there is anything like them to guide you. If you find out your piece of furniture may be antique then first of all check the underside or back to see if you can find the makers stamp.
If you find what you are looking for then this could increase the value of the item, also it can determine the age by finding out what period that maker was around.
Do not think immediately that your piece of furniture is worth a fortune, it all depends on the condition and the wear and the tear, also if it is old it may have been repaired at some point and this could reduce the value.
Your next step would be to contact an antique furniture specialist, you will probably be asked to send photos and details about it. If he or she thinks it could be a genuine antique he may come and have a look at it if he thinks it is important.
If your item is deemed not to be the antique you were hoping for then just appreciate that you have a nice piece of furniture that in time will become one.
You might have pieces of old furniture in your home that you discount because it has been painted to renew its look at some time in the past, It is quite possible that once the paint is stripped back to bare wood you might be looking at something that is antique and worth taking a good look at.
Stripping a piece of furniture of the old paint can be done by yourself but if you are not into Do it Yourself then it can be done professionally. It may be expensive but you will be left with a quality piece of furniture that would cost double to purchase.
You can often find this type of furniture at car boot sales, many people can not be bothered trying to renew old furniture, or it may have belonged to an elderly relative and they just want to dispose of it, if this is the case you may get it for a few shillings and end up the proud owner of a nice piece of furniture or even an antique if you are lucky.
Dealers of every kind make a habit of visiting car boot sales; they will be first on the scene in the early morning in the hope of finding something worth while buying, as they say the early bird catches the worm.
