Valentines Origami probably isn't the first thing that you think of on Valentines Day, but origami with a valentine theme can add an extra special touch to a romantic message. And other valentine's origami projects are beautiful and can be kept forever, and so make wonderful Valentine's keepsakes. One of the oldest art forms in existence is origami, which was created by the Japanese over a thousand years ago. This centuries-old art form is a craft created by paper folding, although this art form is much more complex that it would seem.

The aim of origami, both today and a thousand years ago, is to use geometric folds to create some sort of shape or figure out of a piece of paper. We have a few Valentine Origami ideas that you could have a go at making. They are individually rated for difficulty, because some origami projects are trickier than others are.

Origami Valentines Heart - Easy

The Valentine heart is an easy one to make and looks Great.

Romantic Idea: Make lots of these hearts in assorted sizes and write something romantic and loving on each and pin them to the fridge or wall on Valentines morning.

Take your square piece of origami paper and fold in guidelines to divide the paper into thirds down and across. The guidelines should look like a noughts and crosses board. You might need a ruler to measure out for this bit.

Next fold in the top and the left hand side 'columns' this will give you a little tuft of paper - fold this tuft out flat. Turn the work over and pull down the big flap and fold a neat crisp fold.

Fold down the bottom and side tips and turn in and then turn over. Origami hearts are great for writting little love messages on and pinning to the fridge.

Origami Valentines Rose - Trickier

Everyone loves Roses on Valentines Day so here is an Origami Valentine rose. This rose is the easiest origami rose to make. This rose is a flat bloom which is again great for writing love messages on.

Romantic Idea: fill a large flat-ish bowl with water and add a few floating candles and make 3 or 4 of these origami roses to float on the water with the candles.

Fold the square piece of paper in half corner to corner to make a triangle. Then fold the triangle in half again. Unfold all these folds. With the coloured side down and using the fold lines as a guide, fold the corners of the paper in to the centre.

Next fold in the corners again as you did in the previous step but this time using the lines of where the previous flaps meet as the guidelines. Turn the work over and turn the tips of each corner in, using the guidelines on the underside of the rose. The tips that you turn should be as wide and the straights that will be left, this is to give the rose a rounded base.

Turn the work over. Take each of the four flaps in turn and fold them back on to themselves to create the first row of petals. The previous step reveals more flaps in the middle of the rose. Fold these flaps back on themselves. And let them stand upwards.
