Looking for Cheap Manila Hotels?

A frequent traveler will always find ways to maximize their budget when traveling. One of the most important options for this is finding a cheap hotel accommodation for their journey. Manila, the national capital of the Philippines, and its nearby municipalities are known to offer a variety of hotels and lodging options to suit all travelers alike, whether for business or leisure. Below is a run-down of the most frequent kinds of accommodations available in the city capital which will definitely make a traveler think more about going cheap.

Hotels

One of the most common places to find hotels that go cheap is along Roxas Boulevard, mostly facing the famous Manila Bay. It may be intimidating to see high-rise hotels in this area but comparing further, you will discover that there are also good hotel accommodations that are considered as budget-friendly. It may be because that the Ermita and Malate areas, not too far from the said boulevard, is part of the 'tourist belt' which give wide options for tourists to book hotels depending on their allotted allowances for hotel accommodation.

Motels

If you're pretty much into hopping from one tourist locations to another, a motel is probably one of the most popular alternatives in booking cheap lodging accommodations. Because of its minimum of 3-hour to 24-hour rate package, anyone can budget not just their money but also their time through this option. Motels can usually be found at Pasig near Ortigas area and Pasay, which is a stone's throw away from Roxas Boulevard.

Condotels

If you're in Makati, you will notice that there is a fusion of condominiums and hotels (thus coining the term 'condotels') in this premier business district of Metro Manila. A condotel is similar to the amenities of a hotel but may be rented with rates for daily, weekly, and even monthly schemes. They also come fully-furnished with kitchen equipments, cooking wares, and even utensils. This cuts down on food budget and dining out because anyone can cook up a meal in their own room through this dwelling.

Pension Houses

Commonly found in Ermita and Malate areas, it gives a more unique characteristic than most hotels and other accommodations available because these are lodgings transformed from old houses or mansions to pension houses making it fuss-free and low-key, not to mention, cheap.

Exploring the available accommodations in Manila may be an unforgettable experience itself alongside the usual travel itinerary. Choosing an affordable but comfortable place to crash in by going through the sights, sounds, and culture of this country's capital makes it a worthwhile adventure. Now this only gives tribute to 'hitting two birds with one stone', a true-blue cheapskate traveler's principle.

So, are you ready to hit the birds?

"Philippines" is Helene Cixous's reverie or 'true dreaming' which intertwines Freud's uneasy views on telepathy, autobiographical memories conflating Algeria and Paris, childhood and adult life, shared with her brother 'Pete', and literary evocations from Proust and George du Maurier's forgotten novel Peter Ibbetson. Amid telepathic conversations, real or imagined, and life events uncannily answering one another from a distance, Cixous's dense evocative journey ceaselessly 'returns to its starting point' and, like the twin almonds in one shell evoked by the title, reveals intimate, secret bonds between scenes and beings, real and fictional. Its interpretive sharpness delivered with stylistic elegance and candour will make this study typical of Cixous's art, which plies between literature and criticism, appealing not only to scholars and critics interested in psychoanalysis, autobiography and the act of reading, but also to a broader readership captivated by the hallucinatory coincidences between life, dream and fiction, when 'Reality is the dream. The dream is the true reality'.

The History of the Philippines

The History of the Philippines

$50.84

Located in Southeast Asia, the Republic of the Philippines is comprised of over 7,000 islands. The first known inhabitants of these tropical islands migrated to the Philippines 30,000 years ago over land bridges that no longer exist today. Since then, the Philippines has undergone drastic changes due to large numbers of settlers and colonizers from abroad. For hundreds of years, the Philippines was under Spanish and then United States control. Spanish influence remains a large part of Filipino culture today. Finally, in 1935, the Philippines embarked on the path to independence. The past century has been a postcolonial roller coaster ride for the Philippines. Today, the Philippines' developing economy has sparked international interest and the country has been marked as having one of the most promising potentials for economic growth in the world. "The History of the Philippines" offers a comprehensive account of the Philippines and its struggle to discover a national identity. This volume is an excellent addition to any library; perfect for student and general readers.

Congress of the Philippines

Congress of the Philippines

$84.44

The Congress of the Philippines (Filipino: Kongreso ng Pilipinas) is the national legislature of the Philippines. It is a bicameral body consisting of the Senate (upper chamber), and the House of Representatives (lower chamber) although commonly in the Philippines the term congress refers to the latter. The Senate is composed of 24 senators half of which are elected every three years. Each senator, therefore, serves a total of six years. The senators are elected by the whole electorate and do not represent any geographical district. The House of Representatives is composed of a maximum of 250 congressmen. There are two types of congressmen: the district and the sectoral representatives. The district congressmen represent a particular geographical district of the country. All provinces in the country are composed of at least one congressional district. Several cities also have their own congressional districts, with some composed of two or more representatives. The sectoral congressmen represent the minority sectors of the population. The Philippines 1941-42

The Philippines 1941-42

$15.95

The Philippine Islands were one of two major US bases in the Pacific, the other being Pearl Harbor. The Japanese considered the capture of the Philippines crucial for its efforts to control resource-laden Southeast Asia. As opposed to its attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese intention was to invade and occupy the Philippines in a campaign that was to last five months.  The flamboyant Douglas MacArthur, a hero of World War I and former Chief of Staff led the defense of the Philippines when the Japanese attacked on 8 December 1941. Despite warnings about the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese air forces caught MacArthur's aircraft on the ground resulting in half of his modern bomber and fighter aircraft destroyed. Army Air Forces B-17s attempted to bomb Formosa, but Japanese fighters eliminated them and a Japanese full-scale invasion followed days later. Japanese forces landed in northern Luzon from Formosa. B-17s and naval attacks tried in vain to stop the invasion, but failed. Poorly trained and equipped Philippine Army units could not halt the Japanese and the American and Filipino forces withdrew, even though they outnumbered the initial Japanese forces. Japanese Army units broke through several defensive lines as they drove on to Manila, which was abandoned by the Americans as Macarthur withdrew to Bataan. The Japanese gradually reduced this pocket until the only American position was Corregidor Island. MacArthur left for Australia, as a direct order from President Franklin Roosevelt and was awarded the Medal of Honor, one of the more controversial aspects of the campaign. With little hope of survival, Corregidor fell, with organized resistance ending on 9 May 1942. Although a defeat, the American and Filipino defensive efforts upset the Japanese plan for a swift victory and provided time for Australia and the United States to build up their defenses. It also gave hope to the American public that Americans could stand up to Japan, with the "Battling Bastards of Bataan" providing a source of inspiration. Unfortunately, for the survivors of the campaign, it meant a grueling three years of captivity for some. The Bataan Death March was one of the most infamous events in World War II, with Japanese forces responsible for the deaths of about 600 Americans and between 5,000-10,000 Filipino soldiers dying in the march, some summarily executed by beheading.

The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place

The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place

$47.43

A unified nation with a single people, the Philippines is also a highly fragmented, plural society. Divided between uplander and lowlander, rich and poor, Christian and Muslim, between those of one ethnic, linguistic, and geographic region and those of another, the nation is a complex mosaic formed by conflicting forces of consensus and national identity and of division and instability. It is not possible to comprehend the many changes in the Philippines--such as the rise and fall of Ferdinand Marcos or the revolution that toppled him--without an awareness of the religious, cultural, and economic forces that have shaped the history of these islands. These forces formed the focus of the first edition of The Philippines. Of that 1982 edition, the late Benigno Aquino Jr., noted that "anyone wanting to understand the Philippines and the Filipinos today must include this book in his 'must' reading list."The fourth edition has been updated through the final years of the Ramos presidency, and contains a new section on the impact of President Estrada.

MacArthur and Defeat in the Philippines

MacArthur and Defeat in the Philippines

$4.42

For many, Douglas MacArthur was a general to be ranked with Grant and Lee; for others he was much bluster and some cowardice. The truth, according to military historian Richard Connaughton, lies somewhere in the middle. MacArthur and Defeat in the Philippines is a judicious and hard-headed portrait of a courageous general and deeply flawed man. Douglas MacArthur was born into a military family in 1880, and the need to measure up to the heroic example set by his father drove MacArthur. MacArthur's best qualities would be undone by his arrogance, vanity, deviousness and a truly breathtaking capacity for making enemies -- FDR chief among them -- and so when MacArthur arrived in the Philippines in the mid-30s it was as an exile from Roosevelt's anger. The Philippines were something of a family business for the MacArthur clan (his father had distinguished himself there at the turn of the century). Against all the odds, he assured Washington and the Philippine government of the islands' defensibility against a Japanese attack. In holding this view, Connaughton argues, MacArthur was proceeding on a notion with as much romance to it as military good sense. Willfully blind to the impending crisis, MacArthur and his troops were vulnerable to attack when it came finally in late December of 1941. MacArthur and Defeat in the Philippines is a fascinating study of Douglas MacArthur and the crisis of leadership as well as a focussed study of one of the pivotal moments in World War II.

How to Strategically Evaluate Philippines. Perhaps the most efficient way of evaluating Philippines is to consider key dimensions which themselves are composites of multiple factors. Composite portfolio approaches have long been used by strategic planners. The biggest challenge in this approach is to choose the appropriate factors that are the most relevant to international planning. The two measures of greatest relevance to clinical laboratory equipment are “latent demand” and “market accessibility”. The figure below summarizes the key dimensions and recommendations of such an approach. Using these two composites, one can prioritize all countries of the world. Countries of high latent demand and high relative accessibility (e.g. easier entry for one firm compared to other firms) are given highest priority. The figure below shows two different scenarios. Accessibility is defined as a firm’s ease of entering or supplying from or to a market (the “supply side”), and latent demand is an indicator of the potential in serving from or to the market (the “demand side”). Framework for Prioritizing Countries. Demand/Market Potential Driven Firm. Relative Accessibility. Accessibility/Supply Averse Firm. In the top figure, the firm is driven by market potential, whereas the bottom figure represents a firm that is driven by costs or by an aversion to difficult markets. This report treats the reader as coming from a “generic firm” approaching the global market – neither a market-driven nor a cost-driven company. Planners must therefore augment this report with their own company-specific factors that might change the priorities (e.g. a Canadian firm may have higher accessibility in Canada than a German firm). Latent Demand and Accessibility in Philippines. This report provides a detailed overview of factors driving latent demand and accessibility for clinical laboratory equipment in Philippines. Latent demand is largely driven by economic fundamentals specific to clinical laboratory equipment. This topic is discussed in Chapter 2 using work carried out in Philippines on behalf of American firms and authored by the United States government (typically commercial attachés or similar persons in local offices of the U.S. Department of State). I have included a number of edits to clarify the information provided. Latent demand only represents half of the picture. Chapter 2 also deals with micro-accessibility for clinical laboratory equipment in Philippines. I use the term “micro” since the discussion is focused specifically on clinical laboratory equipment. Chapter 3 is also a stand-alone report that I have authored. It covers proxy pro-forma financial indicators of firms operating in Philippines. I use the word “proxy” because the provided figures only cover a “what if” scenario, based on actual operating results for firms in Philippines. The numbers are only indica

Infectious Diseases of the Philippines is one in a series of GIDEON ebooks which summarize the status of individual infectious diseases, in every country of the world. Data are based on the GIDEON web application ( www.gideononline.com ) which relies on standard text books, peer-review journals, Health Ministry reports and ProMED, supplemented by an ongoing search of the medical literature. Chapters are arranged alphabetically, by disease name. Each section is divided into four sections: 1. Descriptive epidemiology 2. Summary of clinical features 3. Status of the disease in the Philippines 4. References There are 347 generic infectious diseases in the world today. 222 of these are endemic, or potentially endemic, to the Philippines. A number of other diseases are not relevant to the Philippines and have not been included in this book. In addition to endemic diseases, all published data regarding imported diseases and infection among expatriates from the Philippines are included.

Working under this liberal endowment the following expeditions have been in the field In 1906 Mr. S. C. Simms visited the Igorot of Benguet, Lepanto and Bontoc, and the Ifugao of Nueva Viscaya. During 1907-8 Mr. F. C. Cole worked among the Tinguian, Apayao and Kalinga tribes of Northern Luzon, and the Batak of Palawan. The late Dr. William Jones reached the Philippines in the fall of 1907 and proceeded to the Ilongot of the Upper Cagayan river Luzon. After residing a year in that district he was murdered by members of a hostile village. Following Dr. Jones death Mr. Simms returned to the Philippines, secured the material gathered by Dr. Jones and com- pleted the Igorot and Ifugao collections, visiting for this purpose the Mayayao and Amburayan Igorot, in addition to certain points touched on the first expedition. In the fall of 1909 Mr. Cole returned to the Islands and devoted nearly two years to the study of the pigmy blacks of Bataan province, the Bukidnon of North Central Mindanao, and the several tribes residing about the Gulf of Davao in Southern Mindanao. While the primary object of these expeditions was to gather museum collections, much time was given to the study of the mental and material culture, as well as of the language, folklore and anthropometry of the tribes visited. The results of these studies will appear from time to time in the Anthropological Series of this Museum. The present paper forms the first issue of Mr. Coles researches. GEORGE A. DORSEY. Despite warnings about the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese air forces caught MacArthur`s aircraft on the ground resulting in half of his modern bomber and fighter aircraft destroyed. Army Air Forces B-17s attempted to bomb Formosa, but Japanese fighters eliminated them and a Japanese full-scale invasion followed days later.Japanese forces landed in northern Luzon from Formosa. With little hope of survival, Corregidor fell, with organized resistance ending on 9 May 1942.Although a defeat, the American and Filipino defensive efforts upset the Japanese plan for a swift victory and provided time for Australia and the United States to build up their defenses. It also gave hope to the American public that Americans could stand up to Japan, with the "

Triumph in the Philippines: The War in the Pacific

Triumph in the Philippines: The War in the Pacific

Triumph in the Philippines is the third volume in the subseries to deal with the reconquest of the Philippine Archipelago. The narrative traces the broad strategic vision that was employed in arriving at the decision to invade Luzon and bypass Formosa as a steppingstone to Okinawa. This study focuses on the Luzon Campaign with twenty-nine of its thirty-two chapters devoted to this subject. Although the Pacific is decidedly a joint theater, the reader will find only passing references to naval activities in support of this campaign and will have to look to other sources for a more complete picture. On 9 January 1945, the Sixth Army under the command of Lt. Gen. Walter Krueger commenced the largest United States Army operation in the Pacific. It entailed the use of more ground forces than did the operations in North Africa, Italy, or southern France. Unlike previous operations in the Pacific, the number of U.S. troops engaged, coupled with the ability to maneuver these forces in the central plains north of Manila, was more characteristic of European operations than any other Pacific campaign. By the time the campaign officially closed on 15 August 1945, over sixteen American divisions, or their equivalents, were committed to the liberation of the Philippines and the fulfillment of MacArthur's promise. Starting with the landings at Lingayen Gulf, this volume traces the advance of the U.S. troops through the Philippine central plains and the recapture of Clark Air Base and Manila. The volume ends with U.S. troops in northern Luzon and the southern Philippines. Unusual for the Pacific theater are the operations associated with the capture of a major urban center, which proved to be morecostly and destructive than originally estimated. Accurate intelligence, always in short supply during hostilities, proved no less allusive in 1945. Throughout the campaign intelligence estimates between MacArthur and his field headquarters varied widely, affecting both strategic and tactical decisions. No where is this more evident than in the D-Day estimate of Japanese strength on Luzon. Eight days after the invasion, the Sixth Army's original estimate of 152,500 defenders had been raised to 234,500, which proved closer to the Japanese actual strength of some 250,000. Continued overly optimistic assessments of Japanese strength eventually took its toll in American casualties and on morale during the seven and one-half months of campaigning. When the war ended, General Yasmashita, the Japanese commander, was still conducting an active defense in northern Luzon with over 65,000 troops, estimated at the time by General Krueger to be no more then 23,000. Because of the surrender, large numbers of Japanese sources were available to the author, providing insight into the extensive Japanese dispositions, plans, and actions. The reader will find that due credit is given in this volume to the Japanese and their defense of the Philippines.

In Looted, veteran correspondent Donald Kirk cuts through the mystique of democracy that has shrouded the Philippines since the American withdrawal from its military bases there in 1991 and 1992, revealing the corruption that exists beneath the surface. Making use of his extensive firsthand knowledge of the region, Kirk recounts the drama of one of historys greatest volcanic eruptions as just the beginning of a period of looting and exploitation. He provides details and revelations of the Philippine role in the stripdown of Clark Air Base and the subversion of Subic Bay to serve the purposes of one ambitious politician, and he offers a disturbing analysis of the efforts to resolve Muslim and Communist revolt.
