Ouzo is the national drink of Greece, often drank in large amounts with friends, and usually guaranteed to give you a throbbing headache in the morning. Now, after the current revelations of the way both the Greek government and people borrowed, until the nation is on the verge of bankruptcy. The "Ouzo effect" is spreading across Europe, and affecting the future of the common European currency, the Euro.
The Euro is now feeling the ouzo effect, if Greece does default any payments on the huge debts it owns. It could lose value, and hurt both the confidence and goodwill of fellow users of the euro inside the European Union.
After the party, Greece a founder member, and mentor of the aptly named PIGS group of debt-ridden European member States. Greece owes more than the country produces per year, and that is only the nation's public debt. A debt that has been disguised, and could reach over 125% of the nations annual Gross domestic product.
Greece's, current currency is the Euro, and to many economists the only reason the nation is not facing more austerity cuts. But other members of the eurozone, may have to bail out Greece, on order to stabilize the euro, and that is not popular in other European Union countries.
Europeans fear the "Ouzo effect " could spread to the PIGS group, into debt-ridden Italy and eventually Britain. Stemming this effect has sent the European Parliament in emergency sessions, and European leaders anxious to find any viable excuse on why they should help Greece.
Germany, France and the UK do not want to help Greece. But without that help Greece could default on its debts, and collapse within, if the current government creates more unpopular austerity measures which have caused wildcat strikes, and a general feeling of dissent, and open anguish. Which could spill over to the riots and anarchy seen on the Athens streets in 2008.
Many experts see an easy solution, simply let Greece pull out of the eurozone and adopt its own currency, the drachma. Other members of the PIGS group could face the same dilemma, with probably Spain having to adopt the peseta, and Ireland the pound. Once the message is clear that no Country can be helped.
It is not an ideal solution, but obviously the rapid development which came after these countries joined the European Union has obviously failed, and those responsible are both in the corridors of Brussels, and in the growing group of European PIGS.
Expect to see member states of the eurozone, to choose between having a higher valued currency, over helping ailing states which adopted the Euro. Preferring to protect their own wealth, over saving the once proud European dream of unity, and prosperity for all.
