The 3 Most Valuable Pennies in Circulation - Are They in Your Wallet
These coins are what are known as "die varieties." This means they are variations from the normal design in a given coin, usually this are caused by error in the maintenance and preparation. They are rare and valuable! Read on and keep an eye out to see if they are in your wallet or piggy bank.
1. The Lincoln Cent 1969-S Plus a 2x Die Obverse. This is a rare coin that is becoming even less common in circulation as collectors find them. It was the Secret Service which confiscated the early specimens of this coin until such time that the US Mint finally admitted they were genuine. How to spot it: look for the clear doubling of the whole obverse (or side of the "heads") other than the mint mark. Value: the estimated value of this penny is around $35,000.
2. The 1970-S Small Date Lincoln Cent With a Doubled Die Obverse. Only one of the sides of this coin is "doubled," like with virtually almost all true doubled die varieties. If it happens that both sides are doubled, the coin may actually be a result of "strike doubling," which is a common error and thus worthless. How to spot it: look for the doubling on the word "LIBERTY," particularly in the doubling in the letters "LIB." Also, check "IN GOD WE TRUST" for doubling. Value: approximately $3,000.
3. Doubled Die Obverse 1972 Lincoln Cent. This 1972 (no mint) penny shows very strong doubling on all its elements. This one is easy to spot, but tougher to verify. How to spot it: look for a little gouge close the edge above the letter D in the word UNITED--that's a die marker. To verify that it's the real deal, a coin expert will use a "die marker" to make sure the mark was caused by a die. Value: approximately $500.
