Successful penny stock trading requires a strategy. You might know how to research, find the penny stocks that are worth buying and buy at a good price. But you may find yourself watching your profits and probably capital evaporate before your eyes if you don't have a control strategy. No matter the kind of strategy you adopt, Swing Trading, Technical Trading, Day Trading, Momentum Trading, Scalping, the following tips will help you to minimize risks and make money from penny stocks.
Do not chase a stock
Chasing is when you raise your buying price rapidly and desperately in other to get a particular stock. This is a bad and highly risky practice. When a stock is 'running' several people will buy at the same time and buying pressure will drop. This is usually followed by a corresponding drop in price of the stock. You greatly minimize risk of loss by not chasing. If however there is a stock hat you 'must have' and have confidence that it will keep rising, set and stick to a maximum chasing of 5%.
Stick to the tradition - buy low...
Most good penny stocks almost always look unpromising before rebounding and rising up the charts. Be like the smart traders buy on the dips and sell near the peak. When you sell, you will be making money off traders that are chasing the stock!
Split your purchase - Average Down
Do not buy a penny stock at once. Buy it at least twice. For example if you are buying $2000 worth you can buy $1000 first then wait and watch the market before buying the remaining $1000.Doing this is a way of decreasing risk. If the price drops after your first buy, you have only risked half of your money. If it really gets bad, sell your shares and take a small loss. If you are still confident that the stock will rise, you can now buy more shares at a lower price. This is 'averaging down'. A way of reducing the average cost per share on your investment.
Sell smart
To make money form a penny stock the price must go high enough to recover your trading commissions, and keep rising to produce a profit. A good time to sell is when the price of the stock has risen 20% after your purchase. If the stock is running strong it is still advisable to sell around 50%.You might miss some potential profit but know that all stocks that run will always go back down.Get out while it is still running. It is more difficult to sell when a share is falling quickly.When everyone is trying to sell a particular penny stock, place your limit order below the bid. This can often get you a quicker fill at the bid. Also, you don't have to go through the time consuming process of dropping your sell price if the bid drops.
Partial selling and riding freebies
If a penny stock has risen sufficiently for you to sell part of your acquisition to recover all your original investment. Then you can do a partial sell, get your investment back then lean back and enjoy the ride with free money. This is advisable if you have reliable information that the stock will continue to grow.
Set a loss limit
Not all penny stocks will rise. Sometimes even the most perfect penny stock can defy all analysis and start plundering down. Set a limit of how much loss you can take 5%,10%,20%.Cut your losses, recover the money and move on to the next trade!
