You won't get rich selling used clothes on eBay, but you can make a side income at it. And its a terrific way to clean out your closet and have some spare money to get some new clothes.

Let me tell you up front about the realities of selling used clothes on eBay. It's a lot of work, takes a lot of time, and is not hassle free. It is not my favorite way to make money at all, but time and again I find myself listing something on eBay. Here's what to expect, and how to make the process a bit easier.

These are the steps for selling clothes on eBay:

1) Determine what you can get for the clothes you have

This means going on eBay and seeing what other similar clothes are selling for. You are going to learn fast that most clothes are not worth selling on eBay. You need to have fairly new, brand-name clothes that were worth over $30 new to make any kind of money. Otherwise you are better off just taking the clothes to Goodwill for a tax deduction.

2) Choose what to sell

I sell my clothes in batches, and I find that handling any more than 20 items at once gets overwhelming. So weed through that pile of clothes you want to get rid of and pick the best items. If you are making a business of this, you have to make enough money to pay yourself at least minimum wage per hour. If you are just thinning out your closet for some spare money, still keep in mind how much time all 12 steps of selling on eBay take.

3) Clean it up

People get really huffy (for good reason) when they buy clothes that are dirty. If you have something really nice, like a dress or a suit, or anything you hope to get more than $20 for, seriously consider having it professionally cleaned before you list it.

4) Take pictures of it

Take a picture of the tag, of the front of the piece and of the back. If the fabric is noteworthy, take a close-up picture of the fabric or of the stitching to show the buyer what they're getting. If the piece has any problems at all, no matter how minor, take a picture of those areas.

5) Write a description of it, with lots of measurements

Get out a tape measure and record inseam lengths, hem lengths (any extra material to drop the cuffs with?), length of blazer shoulder to shoulder seam, top shoulder seam to cuff, top shoulder seam to bottom of the blazer. Dress lengths should be recorded, as well as armpit to armpit lengths. You will want to include sizes, of course, plus where you got the piece, how long you've had it and how much and where you've worn it.

6) Post the listing

If possible, post your listings on Sunday nights so they expire around 9pm Eastern time. Wednesday evenings around the same time are the next best option. Pay extra for a bold listing and for one or two extra photographs.

7) Answer questions

Promptly and politely. Use the eBay feature where you can post questions and answers on the live listing so everyone can read them.

Get the money from the buyer, if it sells

Send an invoice right after the listing ends, and then again every 48 hours until you are paid. If the buyer has not paid you within a week, you are well within rights to send them an email saying they have to pay within 48 hours or you will report negative feedback and relist the item.

9) Package it

Wrap the clothes in plastic bags to keep shipping dust and moisture off them. If you are shipping breakables, take the extra effort to be 120% sure the item can not get broken in transit. You may find that your packaging costs for shipping are much more than you expected. Remember this the next time you specify shipping costs for a listing.

10) Post it

The post office will actually come and pick up boxes for priority mail. Check the USPS website for details. Otherwise, you get to run to the post office. Use the automated postage machines to skip the line.

Be fair and be kind.
