A penny saved is a penny earned. But people in the US today aren't as concerned with saving their pennies as they are with getting the most value out of them in a tough economy.
One way people are trying to stretch their pennies is by taking part in penny auctions like Quibids.com, BidRivals.com, and BidHere.com. A penny auction is an online auction where you can reportedly win expensive items at incredibly low prices.
In the upcoming holiday season, penny auctions like Quibids, Bid Rivals, and Bid Here are attractive because people can't really afford to pay full retail price, but still want to surprise their friends and loved ones with nice gifts.
These websites allow you to bid on expensive items in increments of one penny, so an item that traditionally costs hundreds of dollars can be yours at a bargain price. Quidbids and Bid Rivals also have a Buy It Now feature, so if you lose an auction you can still get the item you wanted.
However, many people have been accused of starting their own penny auction sites, but without the merchandise and policies to really back it up. These penny auction scams are starting to get a lot of attention. You should do research before getting involved with a specific penny auction site.
Another way that people are trying to make their pennies work for them is through investment. Since the real estate bubble burst and many companies have had to cut backs on benefits, including retirement plans, many companies are trying their hand at investing with penny stocks.
Penny stocks are stocks that are by definition traded under five dollars a share, and sometimes even under one dollar a share. This allows people who aren't very familiar or comfortable with the market to get an introduction to trading.
People also like this idea because of the history of awesome penny stocks, like Sprint or Apple, Inc, that make them believe there is another get rich possibility that they could take advantage of for cheap.
But awesome penny stocks are hard to come by, just as it's not easy to win at the penny auction game. With this in mind, we shouldn't be ignoring the old maxim of "a penny saved is a penny earned." Saving our pennies is just as good an idea as spending them. If you save one hundred pennies, after all, it becomes a dollar. And if you save enough dollars, you'll benefit as much from your pennies as people that are spending them. And maybe more.

Rolling Pennies in the Dark $17.26 “Our intoxicated mother had marched the three of us out into what passed for a living room in the cardboard and tarpaper shack we were existing in on the edge of Nowhere, New Hampshire. She assembled us like an audience on the broken yellow sofa, and said, ‘I’m going to kill myself now, and it’s all your father’s fault.’ “After the dramatic announcement, and once sure we were all looking at the tragedy playing out before us, she took a bottle of sleeping pills out of her purse, and swallowed the entire contents, using vodka as the lubricant.” —excerpt from page 44 Through determination, a deep faith in God, and belief in himself, Douglas MacKinnon has taken the pains of his childhood and turned them into the fuel of compassion. Through his words, you can do the same. A Memoir with a Message It’s impossible for most of us to imagine what it would be like, as a nine-year-old child, to have your own mother empty her .45 pistol into your cardboard bedroom wall, bullets flying above your head, as you hold your baby sister close to protect her. We can’t imagine this, but Doug MacKinnon can. Doug can do more than imagine—he can remember. This very personal memoir is both heartbreaking and highly inspirational. In it, Douglas MacKinnon weaves his astounding story as a desperately poor child and his triumphant transition from living in abject squalor to becoming a White House writer who now has the political influence to change the system—especially as it affects children. But this book is more than the story of one man’s personal journey; it is a memoir with a message. Through this message, the author not only inspires readers to move beyond their own difficulties, he also calls both political parties to task for their shameful neglect of tens of millions of Americans. You’ll be riveted to the story, moved to compassion, and inspired to see the world through new eyes. |

Pressed Pennies $3.95 Pressed Pennies is mainstream fiction, written from a male perspective to a female audience. A la Nicolas Sparks and Robert James Waller, it is a tale of connecting love stories, proving that the world really is a small place and that the trick is to cherish it by living each of its moments to the fullest. Amid the heart-warming romances and deceitful twists and turns, Pressed Pennies tackles the trying issues associated with living in a non-traditional family. In an era of divorce and single-parenthood, it is a story about raising children and peacefully co-existing; making it work with mutual respect and consideration. The book's underlying theme is discovered in the evolution of the 80's child. Though life begins as wholesome and innocent, technology quickly takes over. Suddenly, two parents must leave the home and go to work. Day care, fast food and a list of coveted luxuries replace long talks in porch swings, tree forts and family suppers. The price for comfort proves very expensive, though, as the American family is traded in for the American dream. Early Reviews: "Steve Manchester has a gift for expressing through his writing the complicated and transcendent beauty of the human experience with poignant clarity." -Yolanda King (eldest daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King) Higher Ground "Pressed Pennies is priceless Steve Manchester has an obvious love of words and an amazing ability to use those words to create lasting images in the reader's mind. His detail-oriented, richly drawn characters and descriptions make this story leap off the pages." - Joyce Handzo, In the Library Reviews "Pressed Pennies is a tale of love and second chances and affirms thatlove can come at any stage of life if we are just open. This is a book that is sure to warm your heart." - Roberta Austin, The Compulsive Reader |
