All You Need is Your Pictures and a Prayer
Twenty four hours away from a devastating natural disaster, Hurricane Ike, said to be one of our largest hurricanes since 1900, covering the entire gulf coast- heading right for Houston, TX.
“All you need is your pictures and a prayer” said by a young woman with a smile while being interviewed by CNN. She was preparing to evacuate Houston, Texas while a category three hurricane named Ike approaches on September 11, 2008.
In the fifteen minutes I was watching CNN, they played this clip two times. “All you need is your pictures and a prayer” I had a smile on my face both times. This hit me inside my heart as such strong “truth.”
This young woman is far beyond her years. She gets it! She understands the art of detachment. If we all had her wisdom, I wonder if we would have had this hurricane. Could the hurricane be the catalyst to help us figure out what really matters? To help us define our priorities- to take us out of the ego and put us into our place of truth- our hearts and put our values in check. If we live through our hearts, would we feel more connected to everyone including ourselves?
All we need is our pictures and our prayers. Our picture’s represent our family, friends and pets. Our prayers stands for reverence to a higher power, faith, trust and a sense of believing in something bigger than ourselves, a sense of connection to the unseen spirit world, a belief we are not alone and we can handle anything that comes our way. She was saying all we need to do is hold onto the love for our family, friends, and pets and faith in our God.
I am not taking the disastrous effects of hurricanes lightly; I know they are very scary and dangerous, as I lived through a category four hurricane two years ago. I’m in awe of her spiritual wisdom! She has her values in check. How quickly can we detach from materialistic “things” and be in a place of peace? This woman’s statement displayed a person who LIVES in a way in which I consider illustrates the life long sought after “secret”. In the moment she was being called upon to show her true colors, in a moment of a huge natural disaster, she displayed inner peace with a smile.
She didn’t list all her future worries. She didn’t discus her potential losses. She didn’t portray herself as sad, upset or angry.
It was as if she knew nothing can take anything from her, for she is whole inside. Nothing outside of her can hurt her unless she chooses it to. She was choosing that this storm will not pull her down. It will not take anything of VALUE from her, for what she values can’t be taken by anything outside of her!!! She valued love, family, friends, God, faith and trust. We are made from love, it’s our spiritual DNA. She was living in the moment with trust, faith, detachment and peace in her heart. With this conviction, she knew without a doubt she would be okay! She was living by the old saying we have all heard, “when one door closes, another opens.” This woman became a lover of her reality. She detached from her materialistic things, and embraced exactly what her reality was and took action by being present and moving forward. How quickly can you become a lover of your reality?
It’s is up to us to determine how quickly we can detach from caring about what other people think or how quickly we can adapt to a sudden change or loss in our life? Can we let go and open our arms, eyes and heart and live moment to moment?
I wish you much peace inside your heart!

Ike: An American Hero $3.95 A big, ambitious, and enthralling new biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower, full of fascinating details and anecdotes, which places particular emphasis on his brilliant generalship and leadership in World War Two, and provides, with the advantage of hindsight, a far more acute analysis of his character and personality than any that has previously been available, reaching the conclusion that he was perhaps America's greatest general and one of America's best presidents, a man who won the war and thereafter kept the peace. IKE starts with the story of D-Day, the most critical moment in America's history. It was Hitler's last chance to win the war -- he had the means to destroy the troops on the beaches, but he failed to react quickly enough. The one man who would have reacted quickly and decisively had he been on the spot, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, was home on leave and didn't arrive back at his headquarters until it was too late. It was Ike's plan, Ike's decision, Ike's responsibility. He alone, among all the Allied generals, could win or lose the war in one day, and knew it. But of course there is more to this book than military history. It is a full biography of a remarkable man, ambitious, a late starter, a brilliant leader of men and perhaps the only American general who could command such a difficult coalition, and win the respect of not only his own soldiers, but also those of Great Britain and France, and lead them to a triumphant victory. It is also the story of a remarkable family. Ike grew up in Abilene, Kansas, and the Eisenhowers were Mennonites, who, like the Amish, were deeply committed pacifists, so it is ironic that he went to West Point and became a general, to his mother's horror. It is as well the portrait of a tumultuous and often difficult marriage, for Mamie was every bit as stubborn and forceful as her husband, and it was by no means the sunny, happy marriage that Republican publicists presented to the public when Ike made his first moves towards the presidency. Indeed, behind Ike's big grin and the easy-going, affable personality he liked to project was a very different man, fiercely ambitious, hot-tempered, shrewd, and tightly wound. He was a perfectionist for whom duty always came first, and a man of immense ability. In 1941 he was a soldier who was still an unknown and recently promoted colonel, and just two years later he was a four-star general who had commanded the biggest and most successful amphibious operation in history -- TORCH, the Anglo-American invasion of North Africa. He commanded respect and was dealt as an equal with such world figures as President Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Charles De Gaulle. |
