Pattern Patern

People often express how challenging and exhausting travel is but it does not need to be so!

You CAN, with a few simple exercises in Tai Chi, travel lightly and arrive with bundles of energy instead of only bundles of baggage that we lug along with us. Tai Chi is a vitalizing and energy producing type of exercise capable of improving strength, stamina and over all health.

As we travel through airports, bus stops or life in general, we take our disappointments, frustrations and anxieties and press them down through our nervous system into our musculature creating tension, stress, headaches, ulcers, indigestion, insomnia and many other things that make us ill at ease, uneasy; weakening our bodies and becoming more subsesable to disease. Those who use Tai Chi are just like everyone else; responsible for what we are creating within our bio-body suit, though Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates players just tend to be a bit more aware of that responsibility.

Through one simple concept, one geometric pattern and one simple intent, we can create a limitless number of exercises to fit every situation we can encounter as we sit, amble, stand or rush along the path we are traversing.

The Exercise: The spiral or swaying tree is done by choosing any part of the body and making a circular patern in the air with it. It can start at a wrist or an ankle - the beauty of the spiral is that it releases built up tension both emotional and physical and it can occupy the mind from creating scenarios that have no basis in reality except to invoke anxiety within oneself and ripple out to others.

The Concept: Big circle/small circle - the spiral can be done with just the breath while sitting, standing or moving. Use visualization and perhaps even draw various spirals to help you feel and see the patterns that can start to birth from your play.

Interestingly, the spiral you see all over the southwest is a native American symbol or pictogram stands for "spirit", "whirlwind" and even "breath".

It's a beautiful thing when we start to discover again that much of our quality of life is tied to our quality of movement and the freedom and energy that comes along with it regardless of where our travels take us.
