Exploring Thai Royalty
The Suang Hong Residential Hall is the first historical mansion that visitors encounter in Dusit Garden upon entering through the Northern Gate. Built as a two storey wooden hall, the Suang Hong or Hong Garden is named after the mythical swan that served as Brahma’s vehicle. Being one of the most historically important buildings in Bangkok, the Suang Hong Residential Hall served as the palace of Queen Savang Vadhana who was the grandmother of King Rama V.
Visitors will pass through beautifully kept walkways and well manicured lawns to enter the Suang Hong Residential Palace, which is adorned with photographs of royal ceremonies depicting King Bhumipol and the Crown Prince. On the ground floor of the building rows of mannequins can be seen, modeling traditional royal attire. The upper floor contains a scaled model of the entire Dusit Gardens including the grounds and the palaces.
In a special room downstairs, the majestic Royal Barge Procession is depicted with elaborate models and pictures of the elaborately craved royal barges used for the ceremony. A video of the last Royal Barge Ceremony held in 2003 can also be viewed; this was organized in honour of the dignitaries that arrived for APEC summit in Bangkok.
A room upstairs explains the Royal Ordination Ceremony, pictures of the ordination ceremonies of King Bhumipol and the Crown Prince are also on display here. As all males in Thailand, even members of the royal family are ordained as Buddhist monks for a period of two years, it marks a significant milestone. Other important royal ceremonies such as the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, Royal Swing Ceremony, Royal Investiture Ceremony and the Royal Tonsure Ceremony are also depicted.
Located within close proximity of the Suang Hong Residential Hall is a Bangkok apartment that offers excellent accommodation. This Bangkok serviced apartment is well linked via the transportation system to other sights of the city.

The Palace $5.49 One of today's most imaginative and lyrical writers, Lisa St. Aubin de Teran weaves together passion, idealism, and adventures in this mesmerizing fable set against the ornate backdrop of nineteenth-century Italy. The palace is the vision of Gabriele del Campo, a young, idealistic stonemason's apprentice imprisoned for supporting Garibaldi's revolutionary unification of Italy. A poor peasant, he has fallen in love at first sight with the rich and beautiful noblewoman Donna Donatella. He yearns to be pulled out of poverty, and dreams of winning Donatella's heart and building a palace worthy of his love. As del Campo languishes in prison, he takes the first steps toward his dream. His cellmate Colonel Giovanni Vitelli, a nobleman, educates him in the customs of the gentry; meanwhile, in his mind elaborate plans for the palace's construction are already taking shape. Twice escaping execution, del Campo emerges from prison to find wealth as a fearless gambler in the corrupt underworld of Venice. Winning a large estate in Castello at a sinister high-stakes gambling house, Gabriele begins to build the palace of his dreams. At last he might win Donna Donatella's love. |

Palace, The $6.99 Since 1978, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro has produced about two dozen novels and numerous short stories detailing the life of a character first introduced to the reading world as Le Comte de Saint-Germain. We first meet him in Paris during the reign of Louis XV when he is, apparently, a wealthy, worldly, charismatic aristocrat, envied and desired by many but fully known to none. In fact, he is a vampire, born in the Carpathian Mountains in 2119 BC, turned in his late-thirties in 2080 BC and destined to roam the world forever, watching and participating in history and, through the author, giving us an amazing perspective on the time-tapestry of human civilization. In The Palace, Renaissance Florence provides the background for this story of the collapse of the artistic and literary life of the city after the death of San Germano's friend, Lorenzo the Magnificent, followed by the rise of the fanatical Savonarola. |
