Turkey $12.95 Turkey occupies a strategic position in today's world: the only predominantly Muslim nation to be a member of NATO and an ally of Israel, it straddles both Europe and Asia. Turkey is the link between Islam and Western democracy, between Europe and the Middle East. In this concise introduction, Andrew Finkel, who has spent twenty years in Turkey writing about the country for publications such as The Economist and Time magazine, unravels Turkey's complexities. He sets the complications and transformations of present-day Turkey against the historical background of the Ottoman Empire, the secular nationalist revolution led by Kemal Ataturk, and repeated political interventions by the military, which sees itself as the guardian of Ataturk's legacy. Finkel reveals a nation full of surprises. Where else but in Turkey, Finkel writes, would secularist liberals have supported a prime minister who was once jailed for promoting religious extremism? From the Kurdish question to economic policy, from Turkey's role in Iraq to its quest for EU membership, Finkel illuminates the past and present of this unique, and uniquely consequential, country. |

The Transformation of Turkey $99 In 1923, the Modern Turkish Republic rose from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire, proclaiming a new era in the Middle East. However, many of the contemporary issues affecting Turkish state and society today have their roots not only in the in the history of the republic, but in the historical and political memory of the state's imperial history. Here Fatma Muge Gocek draws on Turkey's Ottoman heritage and history to explore current issues of ethnicity and religion alongside Turkey's international position. This new perspective on history's influence on contemporary tensions in Turkey will contribute to the ongoing debate surrounding Turkey's accession to the EU, and offers insight into the social transformations in the transition from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Nation-State. This analysis will be vital to those involved in the study of the Middle East Imperial History and Turkey's relations with the West. |

Legislating Authority: Sin and Crime in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey $135.96 "Legislation Authority "addresses issues of law, state violence, and state authority within the Ottoman and Turkish context. Rather than engaging in the usual scholarly debate surrounding Ottoman legal reform--contesting or supporting its "secular" or "modern" nature--the book instead examines the way in which criminality as a category was repeatedly redefined in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey between 1840 and 1940. By the turn of the twentieth century, the book argues, criminality had become a political rather than a moral category. The abstract concept most in need of legal protection had become not "the individual," "God," or even "society," but the "state." A corrupt bureaucratic functionary thus posed more of a threat to Ottoman and Turkish self definition than a murderer, an apostate, or a sexual deviant. "Legislating Authority" sees the culmination of this trend in the early Turkish Republican adoption of Mussolini's fascist code of criminal law--a key moment in the development of Turkey's intrusive state structure. It also, however, positions these trends and their culmination within a framework of international comparison. The Ottoman and Turkish experience, it demonstrates, was very much part of a larger global transformation, and legal reform in this part of the modern Middle East was nothing if not "normal.""" |
