What are Factory Reconditioned Products?
Factory reconditioned products are the results of various situations. An item that has been returned to a retailer, and the original packaging has been opened, cannot be sold as "new". Consumer protection laws are in place to prevent this from happening. A product that is slightly used or has a minor cosmetic blemish may find itself being sent to be factory serviced. Products that are damaged in shipping or need a small part replaced are sent to be factory reconditioned. Typically the product in question has a small flaw or defect that prevents it from being considered perfect. If the product is defective in a major way it will usually be discarded for safety reasons. For example, if an electric motor or electronic components are a possible fire hazard, that unit will be destroyed to protect the manufacturer from potential liability issues. Consumer safety is always a top concern for manufacturers.
Regardless of the reason any product that is sent back to the manufacturer is restored to its exact manufacturing specifications by the original manufacturer or a certified service center. The terminology involved may differ. For example, "factory serviced", "factory reconditioned", "refurbished" and "factory renewed" all essentially mean the same thing. Because consumer protection laws prevent manufactures from selling anything that is "reconditioned" as new, the packaging that the product is placed in must not be the same as a "new" identical unit. Usually the differences are minor, such as identical packaging with a sticker indicating it has been "factory reconditioned" or it may come in all white or plain cardboard box again with indication of being reconditioned.
Why would I buy something that is "factory reconditioned"?
Consumer consensus on reconditioned products is overall very positive. Most reconditioned products cannot be visually differentiated from their new counterparts because of this. Reconditioned products offer exceptional value. They are brought back to original manufacturer's exact specifications by a certified service center. They are tested at least twice for proper operation performance and maintain very high quality standards. Reconditioned products have a much lower defect rate than identical "new" units - 2% return rate. They are cleaned and sanitized when necessary and typically come with a manufacturer warranty. With all this said, they are sold at discounted prices that are usually a lot lower than identical "new" units. You, the consumer, end up with a great product covered with a warranty and huge savings! You'll agree when you purchase your first "factory reconditioned" product!
