Most consumers probably don't think about what goes into creating effective CD packaging. As long as the compact disc inside works correctly and lives up to the buyer's expectations, the packaging it came in is of very little consequence. The reality is that CD packaging performs many important functions from the time the product leaves the manufacturer and arrives in the end-user's home or office. As a result, a lot of time, money and effort is invested to make sure that small bit of packaging performs as it should on several different levels.
Here are some of the basic functions of CD Packaging:
- Product Protection. One of the most important roles of CD packaging is to protect the data stored on the compact disc from scratches, cracks and other forms of damage. Therefore, the materials used for this type of packaging must adhere to certain quality guidelines and standards in order for the product to arrive at its final destination unblemished. Even after the end-user purchases the CD and starts to use it, there is a good chance that part of the original packaging will be used to store the compact disc for years to come. Consequently, long-term durability is another important component of effective CD packaging.
- Sales Tool. Beyond its strictly functional role, CD packaging also serves as an important marketing vehicle for both the product itself and the artist or company behind its production. The most successful CD packaging designs are able to grab and hold the prospective buyer's attention long enough to facilitate a buying decision. The written message, selected images, color choices, and overall design conspire together to convince the unsuspecting shopper that the product inside is worth the purchase price. A well-designed package can trigger impulse purchases and significantly increase total sales of the unit.
- Security Device. The way a CD is packaged can also influence how likely it is to be stolen. Obviously, the outer wrapping prevents shoplifters from removing the contents inside. In addition, oversized designs and added security features can make it much more challenging for an entire unit to be stolen. Reduced inventory shrinkage translates to higher profit margins for both the retailer and the manufacturer - and prevents these added costs from being passed along to the consumer.
- Social Statement. The current trend toward sustainable packaging applies to compact discs, as well. All things being equal, many consumers prefer products that have limited impact on the environment and base their buying decisions accordingly. Music industry executives, artists and product manufacturers recognize the need to deliver products that appeal to their end users. As a result, consumer demand for more eco-friendly products has resulted in CD packaging that uses less toxic adhesives, more recyclable materials and is more minimalistic in nature than in the past.
When considering all of these functions, it is hard to believe that something as seemingly simple and straightforward as CD packaging actually performs so well on so many levels
