When it comes to things like iron ore, rubber, oil, and other resources, it is paramount that we play our cards right and don't cause international trade wars. It is common for nations to have trade conflicts often leading to war over such things. We ought to know, this is why the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and let's face it the Iraqi War was much more about oil than Saddam Hussein's killing of Kurds, or his immediate threat of nuclear weapons. And do not get me wrong, I am not an anti-war type guy, and had no use for Saddam or any rogue nation for that matter, I am just speaking about reality here.
Not long ago, I was talking to an acquaintance about China and steel pipe tariffs that the US was forced to put into effect, and he noted sarcastically something interesting, when he stated; "More good news - China is buying an iron mine in Brazil that produces 3 million tons of high-grade ore per year. Our treasury department is already at their mercy, we do not need to allow them to corner the world steel market too. Am I the only one that sees a problem here?"
Yes, that's exactly it. I remember that President Bush did a favor to the steel industry in the US, namely Bethlehem, part owned by the Saudis, which is another reason he put forth the tariffs, that and PA political intervention was needed to secure that state for his re-election. But in hindsight it seems to have been a wise move now, considering China's world- wide scavenger hunt for raw materials, especially metals.
Rare Earth Metals too, which is a whole other problem. Alkali metals as well - Lithium for instance - electric cars, cell phone batteries, military uses, all high-tech portable equipment. This is serious stuff. We have the best iron-ore in the World, very high percentage, it's a shame we've stopped all those mines. Ridiculous really, and with all our new mining techniques we can do it much more efficiently and cleaner.
The bureaucracy is insane - we are our own worst enemy. Ayn Rand was right. We've destroyed our industry, for no apparent reason, it's sickening. I'm quite pissed at all the linear decision making, and the stupid brain-dead morons who vote to continue this suicide run with our great nation. We need to turn this ship around before it is too late. Please think on all this.

Great Lakes Ore Docks and Ore Cars $24.87 The iron mining industry was quite extensive throughout the area known as the Lake Superior Iron Ore District, which included Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ontario and other prominent iron mining regions to the northeast and east of Lake Superior in Ontario as well Quebec and Labrador. All of the iron ore was transported by rail to a wide number of lake ports on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. This book lists all of the ore docks constructed on the Great Lakes, as well as their operational life span right up to the present time. Each chapter for each railroad includes the types of ore docks once or currently operated as well as a roster of ore cars from the 1940s to the present time, and includes photos of the ore docks and ore cars, ore car schematics and pertinent data. It also provides some new perspectives for historical and future research, and can be used for the art work of model railroading. |

Iron Ore $52.27 Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in color from dark grey, bright yellow, deep purple, to rusty red. The iron itself is usually found in the form of magnetite (Fe3O4), hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeO(OH)), limonite (FeO(OH).n(H2O)) or siderite (FeCO3). Hematite is also known as "natural ore." The name refers to the early years of mining, when certain hematite ores contained 66% iron and could be fed directly into iron making blast furnaces. Iron ore is the raw material used to make pig iron, which is one of the main raw materials to make steel. 98% of the mined iron ore is used to make steel. |

By the Ore Docks $57 Located on the shore of Lake Superior near the Iron Range of Minnesota and, for much of its history, the site of vast steel, lumber, and shipping industries, Duluth has been home to people who worked tirelessly in the rail yards, grain elevators, and harbor. Here, for the first time, By the Ore Docks presents a compelling, full-length history of the people who built this port city and struggled for both the growth of the city and the rights of their fellow workers. In By the Ore Docks, Richard Hudelson and Carl Ross trace seventy years in the lives of DuluthÕs multi-ethnic working classÑScandinavians, Finns, Italians, Poles, Irish, Jews, and African AmericansÑand chronicle, along with the events of the times, the cityÕs vibrant neighborhoods, religious traditions, and communities. But they also tell the dramatic story of how a populist workerÕs coalition challenged the Òlegitimate AmericanÓ business interests of the city, including the major corporation U.S. Steel. From the Knights of Labor in the 1880s to the Industrial Workers of the World, the AFL and CIO, and the Democratic Farmer-Labor party, radical organizations and their immigrant visionaries put Duluth on the national map as a center in the fight for workerÕs rightsÑa struggle inflamed by major strikes in the copper and iron mines.By the Ore Docks is at once an important history of Duluth and a story of its working people, common laborers as well as union activists like Ernie Pearson, journalist Irene Paull, and Communist party gubernatorial candidate Sam Davis. Hudelson and Ross reveal tension between DuluthÕs ethnic groups, while also highlighting the ability of the people to overcome those differences and shape the legacy of the cityÕs unsettled and remarkable past. |
