No Quarter $15.99 In this richly researched and dramatic work of military history, eminent historian Richard Slotkin recounts one of the Civil War’s most pivotal events: the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864. At first glance, the Union’s plan seemed brilliant: A regiment of miners would burrow beneath a Confederate fort, pack the tunnel with explosives, and blow a hole in the enemy lines. Then a specially trained division of African American infantry would spearhead a powerful assault to exploit the breach created by the explosion. Thus, in one decisive action, the Union would marshal its mastery of technology and resources, as well as demonstrate the superior morale generated by the Army of the Potomac’s embrace of emancipation. At stake was the chance to drive General Robert E. Lee’s Army of North Virginia away from the defense of the Confederate capital of Richmond–and end the war. The result was something far different. The attack was hamstrung by incompetent leadership and political infighting in the Union command. The massive explosion ripped open an immense crater, which became a death trap for troops that tried to pass through it. Thousands of soldiers on both sides lost their lives in savage trench warfare that prefigured the brutal combat of World War I. But the fighting here was intensified by racial hatred, with cries on both sides of “No quarter!” In a final horror, the battle ended with the massacre of wounded or surrendering Black troops by the Rebels–and by some of their White comrades in arms. The great attack ended in bloody failure, and the war would be prolonged for another year. With gripping and unforgettable depictions of battle and detailed character portraits of soldiers and statesmen, No Quarter compellingly re-creates in human scale an event epic in scope and mind-boggling in its cost of life. In using the Battle of the Crater as a lens through which to focus the political and social ramifications of the Civil War–particularly the racial tensions on both sides of the struggle–Richard Slotkin brings to readers a fresh perspective on perhaps the most consequential period in American history. From the Hardcover edition. |

French Quarter $12.9 "The decadence of Bourbon Street is beckoning..." When prim, proper Liz Marsh suspects her fiance is cheating on her, she's almost too embarrassed to hire a P.I. to prove it. And when she gathers her courage and walks into Jack Wade's office, she has no idea he'll be the sexiest man she's ever encountered, nor that his light Cajun accent will make her tingle in all the wrong--or is that right?--places. After Jack brings her questionable yet undeniably arousing evidence, the only solution is for Liz to get a closer look with her own eyes. And Jack is more than happy to show her everything she's been missing. One night in the French Quarter's entrancing red light district, and Liz finds herself caught up in the provocative allure of an erotic new atmosphere and the sudden, urgent need to experience it for herself--with Jack. Jack's normally a keep-it-casual guy, but as nights with Liz get hotter, so do Jack's feelings for the seductive woman in his arms. Bourbon Street decadence beckons and Liz embarks on a sizzling journey of sexual awakening that has her more willing to shed her inhibitions minute by carnal minute. But someone else has noticed her insatiable appetite for sensual adventure, someone who's just beginning to realize what he's lost--and who's determined to tear Jack and Liz apart... "Warning: Contains sizzling hot sex any way she wants it--and a man (or two) more than willing to show her the ropes. Let the good times roll, baby " |

Majesty of the French Quarter $11.76 Fabulous hotels, churches, fine restaurants, antique shops, and art galleries line the streets of the Quarter. But some of the most fascinating architecture -- that of private residences -- has never been photographed until now. A look beyond the facades reveals rare glimpses of antiquefilled and artfully-decorated interiors where reminders of French and Spanish ancestry, voodoo, and Mardi Gras sit on the mantels and hang on the walls. By blending the familiar with the inaccessible, this portrait of the Vieux Carre emerges as much more than wrought iron balconies and the St. Louis Cathedral. The French Quarter is a melange of European, Caribbean, and American elements warmed by the Southern sun. Yet, regardless of the specific styles, one truth remains -- the French Quarter retains its beauty . . . and its majesty. |

The French Quarter of New Orleans $26.05 Photography -- Southern Studies -- Travel--> There is no place in America like New Orleans's famed French Quarter. With photographs and history, "The French Quarter of New Orleans" explores the unique evolution of this district. The author and photographer team to reveal how war, fire, floods, politics, cultural conflict, and architectural innovation shaped the Quarter. In West Freeman's 160 color photographs the present-day romance of the Vieux Carre is here to savor. But "The French Quarter of New Orleans" moves beyond the Old World facades and into the heart and history of the many peoples-Spanish, French, Creole, Native American, African American, and Italians-who have lived here. From humble, wooden French cottages to stately, brick Spanish Colonial mansions, from Madame John's Legacy to the St. Louis Cathedral, the Quarter's architecture enthralls, and Jim Fraiser's text creates an anecdotal walking tour of memorable and storied sites. Studying buildings, Fraiser points out the struggle between native Creoles and newcomers in the replacement of Creole townhouses and cottages with "shotgun houses" and American Greek Revival homes. Freeman's photographs and Fraiser's text detail the historical significance and architectural styles of over one hundred structures. The history of the Quarter teems with vagabonds and saints, warriors and playwrights, musicians, and politicians. Fraiser animates the fascinating story with such evocative figures as the pirate Jean Lafitte, the conquering general Andrew Jackson, and the voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Riverboat gamblers, ladies of the night, duelists, opera aficionados, plague victims, jazz musicians, charlatans, and Mardi Gras revelers populate the streets and edifices Fraiser describes. For those who have visited the Quarter, this book will be a treasured memento of the district's unparalleled romance and flavor. Jim Fraiser is the author of "Mississippi River Country Tales" (2001) and, with West Freeman, "The Majesty of the Mississippi Delta" (2002). He lives in Jackson, Mississippi. West Freeman is a native of New Orleans. His photographic work has been featured in "Architectural Digest" and is in the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art. |
