Cat Owner's Manual $15.99 You've broken the news to your kitteh that cheezburger is not cat fud. But when your kitty starts tearing up the furniture, spraying on the walls, and getting in a battle royale with your toddler, what's a cat owner to do? They don't exactly give you a handy dandy user manual when you buy a cat. If you buy an electronic gadget, it comes with a great manual in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, and Japanese. Sure, most of the time we just chuck it to the side and start tinkering, but sometimes, we have to reference it for the trickier parts. The Cat Owner's Manual is written in the technical style you know and love from those electronic gadgets you own and it's full of photos and diagrams that look like they come from our favorite furniture store for college kids and divorced men. (You know the one - if you don't have a home, you can buy one there.) Celebrated veterinarian Dr. David Brunner teams up with acclaimed author Sam Stall to provide a book chock full of useful advice for both new and experienced cat owners. Start out with the "parts list" (in which we learn that nipples are preinstalled docking ports for peripherals, but are inoperable in male models due to circuitry), move on to the many makes and models, home installation, programming, fuel requirements, maintenance, and much more. |

The Sweet Shop Owner $12.78 The first novel from the Booker Prize-winning author of Last Orders and Waterland In the sweet shop Willy Chapman was free, absolved from all responsibility, and he ran his sweet shop like his life quietly, steadfastly, devotedly. It was a bargain struck between Chapman and his beautiful, emotionally injured wife a bargain based on unexpressed, inexpressible love and on a courageous acceptance of life's deprivations . . . threatened only by Dorry, their clever, angry, unforgiving daughter. In his moving first novel, The Sweet Shop Owner, Graham Swift illuminates the history of one man through flashbacks on the last day of that man's life. Through the succinctly evoked provincial decades one of the engrossing features is the difficulty of love and of communication between generations' London Review of Books This beautifully balanced novel describes the arrangements, accommodations, pacts and treaties of our ordinary lives' The Times A quiet but beautifully shaped book' Literary Review Book for book, Swift is surely one of England's finest novelists' John Banville A remarkable novel . . . There is a touch of Joyce in Graham Swift's revelation of the hidden poetry of small men's lives' New York Times Book Review |

The Mahler Symphonies: An Owner's Manual [With CD] $18.08 Since Gustav Mahler was rediscovered in the early 1960s, his symphonies have become arguably the most popular works in the modern orchestral repertoire. Mahler's Symphonies: An Owner's Manual is the first discussion of the ten completed symphonies (No. 1-9 plus "The Song of the Earth") to offer music lovers and record collectors a comprehensive overview of the music itself, what it sounds like, how it is organized, its form, content, and meaning, as it strikes today's listeners. The book caters to the novice as David Hurwitz describes what the listener will hear, section by section, using simple cues such as important instrumental solos, recognizable tunes, climaxes, and other easily audible musical facts. He explains how each work is arranged, how the various parts relate to each other, and how one work leads to the next. It describes the emotional extravagance that lies at the root of Mahler's popularity, the consistency of his symphonic thinking, the relationship of each work to its companions, and his dazzling and revolutionary use of orchestral instruments to create an expressive musical language that is varied in content and immediate in impact. The accompanying CD contains recordings from Symphony No. 1, Third Movement; Symphony No. 2, First Movement; Symphony No. 5, Third Movement; and Symphony No. 7, Second Movement: "Nachtmusik I." |

Cuban Star: How One Negro-League Owner Changed the Face of Baseball $24.61 A proud and boisterous Negro League team owner, Alex Pompez rose to prominence during Latino baseball’s earliest glory days. As a passionate and steadfast advocate for Latino players, he helped bring baseball into the modern age. But like many in the era of segregated baseball, Pompez also found that the game alone could never make all ends meet, and he delved headlong into the seedier side of the sport—gambling—to help finance his beloved team, the New York Cubans. He built one of the most infamous numbers rackets in Harlem, rubbing shoulders with titans of the underworld such as Dutch Schultz and eventually arousing the ire of the famed prosecutor Thomas Dewey. He also brought the Cubans, with their incredible lineup of international players, to a Negro League World Series Championship in 1947.  Pompez presided over the twilight of the Negro League, holding it together as long as possible in the face of integration even as he helped his players make the transition to the majors. In his later days as a scout, he championed some of the brightest future Latino stars and became one of Latin America’s most vocal advocates for the game.  That today’s rosters are filled with names like Rodriguez, Pujols, Rivera, and Ortiz is a testament to the influence of Pompez and his contemporaries. |

ACT Like an Owner: Building an Ownership Culture $3.95 Most workers are conditioned to view themselves as one-dimensional in relation to their company—as a salesperson, or an engineer, or a manager. But imagine the possibilities if everyone in your organization started thinking and acting like entrepreneurs—like owners of the business. Imagine if your employees shared the same beliefs, both in their abilities and in the purpose of your business, and focused all their energies on making that business successful—knowing that they, in turn, would become successful as well. That is the power of an ownership culture, and this book will show you how to mobilize human intellect and ingenuity for competitive advantage. "Act Like an Owner" is an action guide to building a culture of employee ownership within an organization. Authors Blonchek and O'Neill present their business model, "Act Like an Owner," which grew out of their experience building information technology service businesses. This model is a roadmap for applying today's most important management practices in a competitive, rapidly changing environment. The authors use this approach as part of their consulting practice, and are the first to detail how to implement such a program company-wide. "Act Like an Owner" introduces the internal franchise framework that can be used for unlocking the entrepreneurial spirit in your organization. From this book, you'll learn how to define your company's operating model—the way you choose to do business—and then extend the model to your employees. The authors then explain how to link employee behaviors to each element of business performance. They demonstrate how to focus your entire organization on a business goal while addressing employees' individual needs for opportunity and growth. You'll learn how to attract and hire people with a positive, entrepreneurial attitude who can create an environment that establishes the values and behaviors you need. At the heart of the internal franchise is the ownership culture, a corporate culture built on principles and values that compel everyone in your organization to think and act like an owner of the business. The authors describe the impact of an ownership culture on an organization, illustrating how you can build equity in that culture and make it part of your company's brand identity. They explore the power of such a culture to create an environment of shared values and goals. You'll learn the formula for creating an ownership culture and putting it to work in your organization, and you'll hear the perspectives of senior executives at companies currently adopting the "Act Like an Owner" program, including those at Aspen Systems, CACI, STAC, PSINet, and ConSonics. In addition, the authors apply the ownership culture model to one of the most pressing problems facing business today: attracting and retaining skilled workers. Filled with examples, anecdotes, and techniques, "Act Like |
