One Dollar

Obesity can be measured in many ways. It can range from being just a little overweight, all the way up to not being able to move around your own house. You read all the stories and wonder where you see yourself in all the obesity talk going on in the world. From New York to Paris and Beijing to Australia, everyone has an opinion on weight control or should I say lack of weight control.

I read an article that made me think about how people react to a positive or negative remark about weight. I believe people have a right to their views and we must ensure that we do not let ourselves get mislead into believing everything we read.

Researchers in Seattle calculated how many calories a dollar can buy: 1200 calories of chips, but only 250 calories of carrots. Lets look at this from many angles:

  • When I read this my reaction was that money can "only" buy bad foods and not good foods. But then I said, wait a minute is that what this really means? Then I asked myself if the 1200 calories of chips are necessary to help me sustain life and if they have value? The answer is that they are empty and unnecessary calories therefore have little or no value to me.
  • Then I asked myself if the 250 calories represented a small amount of carrots or just small compared to the 1200 calories of chips? You guessed it, small compared to the chips.
  • Then I asked myself, how full do I feel after eating just a small 1200 calorie portion of chips compared to 2 whole bags of small baby carrots, yes 2 whole bags of baby carrots that I love to eat just as a snack.
  • I eat smart now and I thought that 2 bags of little carrots take much more time to eat than a small bag of chips and I choose the carrots over the chips any day.

I concluded that eating 2 whole bags or 250 calories of carrots was not only healthier than the chips but also satisfies my need to eat a lot of food when I am hungry. Try to eat 2 whole bags of carrots compared to one little 1 dollar bag of chips and you will see what I mean.

Everything you read is not as it appears the first time you look at it. When I decided to take control of my weight I needed to be in charge of me. Food for thought.

The Dollar Crisis

The Dollar Crisis

$26

In this updated, second edition of the highly acclaimed international best seller, The Dollar Crisis: Causes, Consequences, Cures , Richard Duncan describes the flaws in the international monetary system that have destabilized the global economy and that may soon culminate in a deflation-induced worldwide economic slump. The Dollar Crisis is divided into five parts: Part One describes how the US trade deficits, which now exceed US$1 million a minute, have destabilized the global economy by creating a worldwide credit bubble. Part Two explains why these giant deficits cannot persist and why a US recession and a collapse in the value of the Dollar are unavoidable. Part Three analyzes the extraordinarily harmful impact that the US recession and the collapse of the Dollar will have on the rest of the world. Part Four offers original recommendations that, if implemented, would help mitigate the damage of the coming worldwide downturn and put in place the foundations for balanced and sustainable economic growth in the decades ahead. Part Five , which has been newly added to the second edition, describes the extraordinary evolution of this crisis since the first edition was completed in September 2002. It also considers how the Dollar Crisis is likely to unfold over the years immediately ahead, the likely policy response to the crisis, and why that response cannot succeed. The Dollar Standard is inherently flawed and increasingly unstable. Its collapse will be the most important economic event of the 21st Century.

Biography of the Dollar

Biography of the Dollar

$11.99

Will the sun set on the greatest currency in the history of the world? For decades the dollar has been the undisputed champ. It’s not only the currency of America but much of the world as well, the fuel of global prosperity. As the superengine of the world’s only superpower, it’s accepted everywhere. When an Asian company trades with South America, those transactions are done in dollars, the currency of international business. But for how much longer? Economists fear America is digging a hole with an economy based on massive borrowing and huge deficits that cloud the dollar’s future. Will the buck be eclipsed by the euro or even China’s renminbi? Should Americans worry when the value of the mighty U.S. dollar sinks to par with the Canadian “loonie”? Craig Karmin’s in-depth “biography” of the dollar explores these issues. It also examines the green-back’s history, allure, and unique role as a catalyst for globalization, and how the American buck became so almighty that $ became perhaps the most powerful symbol on earth. Biography of the Dollar explores every aspect of its subject: the power of the Federal Reserve, the inner sanctums of foreign central banks that stockpile the currency, and the little-known circles of foreign exchange traders that determine a currency’s worth. It traces the dollar’s ascendancy, including one incredibly important duck-hunting trip and the world-changing Bretton Woods Conference. With its watermark, color-shifting inks, and a presidential portrait that glows under ultraviolet light, the dollar has obsessed foreign governments, some of which have tried to counterfeit it. Even Saddam Hussein, who insisted on being paid in euros for oil, had $750,000 in hundred-dollar bills when captured. Yet if a worldwide currency has enabled a global economy to flourish, it’s also allowed the United States to owe unbelievable, shocking amounts of money—paying hundreds of millions of dollars every single day just in interest on foreign debt; that’s raised concerns that the dollar standard may not be sustainable. Any threat to the dollar’s privileged status would do much more than hurt American pride. It would mean U.S. companies and citizens would not be able to borrow at the low rates they have become accustomed to. The dollar’s demise would impact the rest of the world, too, boosting the costs of trade and investment if no other currency was able to play the same crucial role. Ultimately the dollar system may weaken, but it should endure—a while longer, at least; it’s in few people’s interest to see it fail, and there is still no credible alternative. Biography of the Dollar is must reading for anyone who wants to understand what truly makes the world go ’round—and whether it will continue to spin the way we want it to. From the Hardcover edition.

The Death of the Dollar?

The Death of the Dollar?

$96.59

Since its remarkable rise from the ashes of WWII, the dollar has established itself as the international currency of choice. Supported by Americas superpower status, its premier position appeared guaranteed for many years to come. Recent threats however have emerged, which are threatening to not only dislodge the dollar from its unique and distinguished role, but also put to the test Americas continued dominance in international affairs. Arpad Vargas scholarly research dives into one of the most pressing issues of our time: the continuity of the international monetary system in its present form. Can the backer of the international currency continue to be the largest debtor nation in the world? Will the proposed Euro denominated Iranian oil bourse be able to provide the opportunity for the world to shift away from the dollar? If so, can the Euro actually replace the dollar as the international currency? Find the answers to these crucial questions and discover what possibilities lie ahead for the international monetary order. It isn't every day a movie star steals your husband. When that day comes for Chiffon Butrell, of Cayboo Creek, South Carolina, she looks to the Bottom Dollar Girls to help her out of one fine mess. As a waitress at the local Wagon Wheel restaurant, Chiffon pegs her fortunes to a winning entry in a local video store's Be-a-Movie-Star contest. But her celluloid dreams are dashed when her baby takes sick and her husband, Lonnie -- one fine specimen of Southern manhood -- heads for the Hollywood Hills solo. On set, he turns the head of leading lady Janie-Lynn Lauren, whose siren call is Oscar caliber. Back in Cayboo Creek, Chiffon manages to lose her temper and her job in quick succession -- only to discover that Lonnie's paycheck from the Nutra-Sweet plant has been forwarded to a California address. With three kids to feed, Chiffon comes up more than a dollar short. Her good friends try their best to pitch in. But there are too few hands to lend, what with Elizabeth and her husband, Timothy, expecting their first baby any day and the rest of the Bottom Dollar Girls knee-deep in their secret -- and possibly scandalous -- plan to raise money for the Cayboo Creek Senior Center. When a slick of Wesson Oil at the Winn-Dixie gets the better of Chiffon's ankle, there's just one thing to be done -- call on estranged older sister Chenille, who hails from Bible Grove, South Carolina. A prissy, fussy spinster prone to dressing her dog, Walter, in matching plaid "mother-son" outfits, Chenille is everything former beauty queen Chiffon detests. Suddenly the tabloid media gets wind of Janie-Lynn and Lonnie's torrid romance, landing sleepy Cayboo Creek on the star map. Under the glare of camera lights, the sisters must put aside their longtime grievances to forge a newfound relationship. As crisis reigns, Chenille is welcomed by the Bottom Dollar Girls for her cool head and quick thinking. And when Chenille runs into a little trouble of her own, she begins to see the future in friendship. A rollicking, hilarious novel about two sisters who are each one of a kind, A Dollar Short is a delicious page-turner worth every last cent.

What happens when two high school teachers get fed up with their soaring grocery bills and decide to try to feed themselves on one dollar each, per day? Authors Kerri Leonard and Christopher Greenslate describe how they did it--and also include sections about eating on a little more than $4 a day, as well as on the actual costs of eating a healthy diet. On a Dollar a Day also includes fascinating facts about the way our food gets to the table and the hidden costs--both personal and financial--along the way: How food companies "short size" packages so that you pay more for less food? Why one tablespoon of salad dressing costs as much as a whole orange? How grocery stores auction off foods past their "sell by" dates? Why processed foods have a higher markup than fresh foods? Why it takes so long for food prices to drop, even after fuel and shipping costs go down? How 36 million Americans have limited food options, even during a national obesity epidemic?

For Judge Knott, the case before her seems to be an ordinary misdemeanor -- except that the personal property that's been destroyed is an inflatable carnival ride. Why does the ride owner's charm bracelet awaken half-forgotten memories? And what is her connection to Deborah's own family? When one of the concessionaires is found dead, his mouth stuffed with quarters from his game of chance, Deborah soon learns that he was also chancing a little blackmail on the side -- blackmail that may threaten one of her brothers. In carnie lingo, "A fast dime is better than a slow dollar." Torn between judicial ethics and family love, Deborah must decide who gets which before more lives are ruined and the carnival moves on.
