So you found a small box of old coins in your grandmother's attic, and you want to clean them up and sell them. You have out the silver polish, the baking soda, and the jewelry cleaner, and you're ready to go.
Stop right there! Old coins can be damaged by traditional cleaning products, or even by polishing. Most of the "dirt" on coins is tarnish or some other reaction between the coin and its environment, and when you remove that "dirt," you're actually removing a layer of the coin's metal. Very valuable ones should be cleaned only by professional conservators, and those that have some value should be cleaned very carefully and with the least damaging methods possible. Start with these tips.
1. If you're going to sell your coins to a collector or dealer anyway, do not clean them at all. A good dealer can tell the difference between a coin that has been cleaned and a coin that has been carefully preserved, and you'll get a little more money for the un-cleaned coin than for one you've cleaned even very cautiously.
2. Provided the coin is a relatively modern one with no iron in it, let it soak overnight in warm distilled water to loosen and dissolve any actual dirt on its surface. Do not scrape or scrub to eliminate dirt after the soak; instead, use a cotton cloth to gently dry it. Soak again if necessary. The coin should be clean enough when you're done with this that you can see all the markings on it, especially year and mint markings. If you don't know where to look for these on your coins, pick up a book on numismatism (coin collecting) to tell you.
3. Do NOT use anything metal to clean your coins. If you have small areas that need to have debris picked out of them, use toothpicks or soft-bristled toothbrushes. Never scrub or scrape hard, and only press against the dirt, not the coin itself.
4. Olive oil makes an excellent soak for gummy residues. Drop the coins in, allow them to soak overnight, then clean off the oil with a cotton cloth or Q-tip. Repeat as necessary. You can get rid of the last of the olive oil with a little gentle laundry detergent or an industrial degreaser. Another option is using Murphy's oil soap or a similar product, then rinsing several times in warm distilled water until the soapy residue is gone.
5. Baking soda, or baking soda and vinegar together, cleans some coins. Avoid doing this with coins that have a green (coppery) patina. Use this method only after you've failed with the others, as the cleaning may expose deep pitting that you'd have been better off leaving under dirt. Never soak your coins in baking soda and vinegar more than thirty seconds.
6. Water softeners can be very good for removing crusted residue. This is another thing to try when all else has failed.
7. Never use tarnish remover on silver coins; instead, try lemon juice, ammonia, or a baking soda paste.
To protect the coins, do not polish them to a shine once they are clean; instead, leave the patina intact, as it prevents further corrosion. You can also coat them lightly with bees wax and store in acid-free paper envelopes to keep them in beautiful condition.
