Motorized Shades In New York - A Necessary Purchase
In the past decade, New York City has seen a record number of all glass residential developments built. With walls of windows, these modern high rises boast breathtaking vistas. While providing dramatic views, these expansive windows are not without their drawbacks.
Most rooms are completely bathed in sunlight. Though this lends a sense of spaciousness and openness much desired by new purchasers, the heat and glare that accompany this sunlight are problematic. The former causes interior climate issues, while the latter's effects range from annoying disruption to costly destruction. The heat absorbed through the glass taxes even the most robust air conditioning systems and can cause monthly bills to skyrocket far beyond the new owners' budgeted amount. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal tells the story of an interior designer who moved from a traditional brick-walled apartment building to a new glass-walled high rise, it explains that,
electric bills doubled per square foot because of all the heat-transferring glass.
The glare from the sun confounds TV watching, computer use and even reading. The rays of the sun can fade furnishings, cabinets, flooring, walls and artwork. The same article in the Wall Street Journal tells the story of Sara Antani, who purchased a new 17th floor condo with expansive views of the Hudson River in New York City.
After moving in, the sun bleached her...European sectional sofas, which cost $20,000.
Obviously, window shades are a must but heat gain and sun damage are a common occurrence, not just in homes without shades, but also when shades are not lowered during the day and at peak sunlight hours. The problem is that wall-to-wall windows mean a lot of shades need to be lowered each and every day which can be a time-consuming process. Pressing one button upon leaving their homes in the morning is much more likely to happen than manually closing 5, 10, 15 sometimes more than 20 shades in a unit. If each shade takes 10 seconds to lower, it means precious minutes are wasted in this rather painstaking process.
Once bought as a status symbol or for out of reach windows, motorized shades have definitely gone mainstream. Their convenience protects interiors and this has become a major priority for consumers, especially considering that sun damage to interior furnishings and fixtures is rarely covered by insurance policies. The window treatment industry is responding by offering motors that can be controlled by timers and sun sensors to ensure interiors are protected even if the homeowner forgets to press a button. Today, many new condos are being built with wiring in place for motorized shades at every opening. Motors themselves are smaller, quieter, more efficient and less expensive than in years past.
The drawbacks of vast window expanses, it seems, are learned by most people only after moving into their new, modern oasis. (Particularly the first morning!) This brings up an important point and helpful tip. Paper temporary shades, which are like large accordion-style post it notes for windows, are inexpensive and can be found at Home Depot. These temp shades are extremely useful in the first few weeks after moving in, especially for bedroom/sleeping areas or rooms with valuable art or furnishings. Even if you plan to order shades as soon as you move in - after deciding upon and signing a contract for most motorized blinds, shades or curtains, a typical lead time prior to installation is at least 3 weeks. (note: most shading companies will provide these temporary shades free of charge, if they do not offer, definitely ask). Despite their drawbacks, wall-to-wall and floor to ceiling windows are what consumers are looking for. According to one New York real estate agent;
Interiors are important but in many cases, the view is what sells.
As consumers weigh increased cooling (and heating) costs, as well as sun damage to interiors, they are deciding that the best solution is to control the sunlight...at the touch of a button.

The Notes $9.99 Ronald Reagan’s The Notes is a fascinating window into the mind of our fortieth president and the writers and thinkers to whom he turned for advice, inspiration, humor, and hope. Collected by the Ronald Reagan Foundation, the book includes both Reagan’s own writing and his favorite quotations, proverbs, and excerpts from speeches, poetry, and literature. The breadth of these notes sheds light on a man who was deeply engaged with the arts, culture, and politics, from his time as one of the nation’s most popular actors to later years as one of its most beloved presidents. Known as the “Great Communicator,” Reagan sought wisdom from a wide-ranging set of political figures, philosophers, novelists, and poets, including Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, John F. Kennedy, and Thomas Jefferson, as well as Mohandas Gandhi, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Mark Twain, and Thomas Wolfe. While the number one New York Times bestselling Reagan Diaries detailed daily life inside the Oval Office, The Notes encapsulates a lifetime of reflections on work, marriage, and family in classic one-liners such as “Flattery is what makes husbands out of bachelors” and “Money may not buy friends, but it will help you to stay in contact with your children.” Reagan’s own writing—his jokes, aphorisms, and insights into politics and life—is often surprising and reveals a view of the president that has rarely before been seen. Historic, illuminating, and deeply captivating, The Notes is a remarkable collection of the thoughts of one of our most beloved presidents. |

American Notes $11.99 American Notes is the fascinating travel journal of one of nineteenth-century America's most celebrated visitors: Charles Dickens. A lively chronicle of his five-month trip around the United States in 1842, the book records the author's adventures journeying by steamboat and stagecoach, as well as his impressions of everything from schools and prisons to table manners and slavery. More than a travelogue, it is also a serious discourse on the character and institutions of a young democracy. Dickens distrusted much of what he saw, and he wrote so frankly that the New York Herald dismissed the work as 'the essence of balderdash.' In retrospect, American Notes can be read as the account of a traumatic excursion from which Dickens emerged, both emotionally and politically, a changed man. With a new introduction by Christopher Hitchens. |

Notes for Friends $19.7 In Notes For Friends, world-renowned photographer Robert Adams explores the possibility of discovering beauty in the compromised landscape of the new American West. His photographs, rendering the landscape in rich black-and-white images, clearly demonstrate that beauty can be found, suggesting a new kind of exploration that could yield a transforming discovery -- the basis for a love of home. Pictures in the book reacquaint us with places that we may have lost to habit or prejudice. Robert Adams encourages us to walk minor roads that at first appear inconsequential, but that in fact lead to wonder. Light rains its miracle on fields next to suburban developments, across the slopes of nameless foothills, and onto trees next to expressways. For his work Adams was given fellowships by the Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundations, and was awarded the Spectrum International Prize for Photography. Charles Hagen, writing in The New York Times, has observed that "Mr. Adams has over the last two decades helped transform landscape photography in the United States." He has made a name for himself photographing that which was being lost in the name of progress, and in Notes for Friends Robert Adams looks back at the landscape of his beloved Colorado and tries to find what is left to be gained. |

Notes from the Bowery $33.6 In the U.S., the homeless have traveled from the freight train to the shelter. Skid row was an extended stop along the way. Giamo reveals his encounter with the city and old Bowery of the 1970s. He simply followed the drift of homelessness. When it led him to the Bowery, the historic skid row, he dropped down to what had been, and still was at that time, the netherworld of New York City. Striving to attain authenticity, the author and his collaborator immersed themselves in the usual activities of the area and befriended the residents. As a result, they were enlightened about the lifestyle and meaning of skid row homelessness. Notes from the Bowery combines the personal essay, literary nonfiction, and cultural history to represent the significance of American life in the city and on the skids. Engaging, insightful, and deeply felt, Notes from the Bowery will give readers an enriching experience as they accompany the author on a journey of descent and discovery. Notes on Blood Meridian $18.74 "Blood Meridian reads like a conflation of the Inferno, the Iliad, and Moby-Dick . . . an extraordinary, breathtaking achievement." --Independent (London) "Sepich lets us see how Cormac McCarthy went about crafting what he built, with the result that Blood Meridian . . . becomes more a wonderment than ever. This is constructive scholarship at its best." --Shelby Foote Blood Meridian (1985), Cormac McCarthy's epic tale of an otherwise nameless "kid" who in his teens joins a gang of licensed scalp hunters whose marauding adventures take place across Texas, Chihuahua, Sonora, Arizona, and California during 1849 and 1850, is widely considered to be one of the finest novels of the Old West, as well as McCarthy's greatest work. The New York Times Book Review ranked it third in a 2006 survey of the "best work of American fiction published in the last twenty-five years," and in 2005 Time chose it as one of the 100 best novels published since 1923. Yet Blood Meridian's complexity, as well as its sheer bloodiness, makes it difficult for some readers. To guide all its readers and help them appreciate the novel's wealth of historically verifiable characters, places, and events, John Sepich compiled what has become the classic reference work, Notes on Blood Meridian. Tracing many of the nineteenth-century primary sources that McCarthy used, Notes uncovers the historical roots of Blood Meridian. Originally published in 1993, Notes remained in print for only a few years and has become highly sought-after in the rare book market, with used copies selling for hundreds of dollars. In bringing the book back into print to make it more widely available, Sepich has revised and expanded Notes with a newpreface and two new essays that explore key themes and issues in the work. This amplified edition of Notes on Blood Meridian is the essential guide for all who seek a fuller understanding and appreciation of McCarthy's finest work. |
