The recent escalation of tensions in the Korean Peninsula recently is nothing new. So long as the world and the United States continue to "give in" to the demands of the rebellious state in the north, the entire Korean landmass will constantly be under the cloud of impending war. North Korea's regular aggression towards its neighbor is a constant reminder of how far the world has disregarded the potential danger of war in the Pacific once and for all. The regime of Kim Jong Il thrives on intimidation and suppression even within the confines of its borders. It is but natural for it to do the same thing to its neighboring rival, which seemed impotent enough to strike back. However, with the murderous artillery barrage initiated by North Korea on the island of Yeonpyeong last week, which killed civilians and South Korean military personnel alike, the Asia-Pacific region is never far from another war.
DPRK or The Democratic People's Republic of Korea never stands alone. Its provocative actions against South Korea was nurtured by the feeling of invulnerability due to its giant neighbor way up north, China and Russia. Or so it seemed. During and after the Korean War, North Korea was a total rabble but it managed to stand on its feet because of Chinese aid and encouragement. Russian aid also flowed freely for several years but dropped significantly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Though its economy has improved after the Korean War, North Korea is still largely an impoverished country and its economy is, at best, struggling. Several decades later, North Korea hardly shows any progress in terms of economic growth. With overemphasis on maintaining a sizable army, North Korea's agriculture was not given much attention resulting to severe food shortages throughout the country for years. Millions of people suffered malnutrition and many died of starvation. The UN and world, in its wisdom thought this tiny, inconsistent nation was on the brink of extinction that aids amounting to billions were poured into the country to save the population. In reality, the people still suffered because food aid meant for them were diverted to the military instead. This was the start of the enlightenment of North Korea's government--that it can dupe the world into continuously giving aid to the country through self-inflected suffering of its people. Thus, common North Koreans suffer while Kim Jong-il and his cronies live in luxury and comfort due to economic aids from its neighbors and the West. All Kim needs to do was to trigger some controversial declaration of natural calamities to the world and wait. If no signs of nature-caused can be used to entice the world to take notice on the plight of common folk North Koreans, the North Korean government would switch to its another tool--intimidation.
Kim Jong-il knew that when he threatens his neighbors, say by emphasizing the destruction of Seoul through artillery fire, or by test firing missiles over the Sea of Japan, he would get the attention of the world. He already used this tactic several times in this decade. North Korea's ambition to successfully create an effective nuclear device is another way of its long list of intimidation strategies. And the world gave in...several times already. So long as the UN will continue to counter North Korea's threats with empty words, it will continue to act this way aggressively. The problem is, the more the world ignores North Korea, the more violent its intimidation becomes. The incident at Yeonpyeong Island is a perfect example.

Korea $17.19 Korea is one of the critical flashpoints in the world today. News of North Korea's recent nuclear tests, conducted in defiance of international pressure, drew widespread condemnation and raised serious concerns about the threat now posed to regional and international security by the regime of North Korea's dear leader Kim Jong-Il. This book penetrates the veil surrounding the conflict on the Korean peninsula and North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes. It provides a thorough historical analysis of relations between the two Koreas since the Korean War, which traces both North Korea's path to economic ruin and South Korea's transition from struggling dictatorship to vibrant democracy. As well as examining the political and economic development of North and South Korea at the domestic level, the book goes on to explore regional relations with Russia, China and Japan and, most importantly, America's dealings with Korea and its negotiations with North Korea, in particular. It concludes with an analysis of North Korea's current nuclear programme and its likely impact on international security in the 21st century. |

North Korea/South Korea $9.95 The Korean peninsula, divided for more than fifty years, is stuck in a time warp. Millions of troops face one another along the Demilitarized Zone separating communist North Korea and capitalist South Korea. In the early 1990s and again in 2002-2003, the United States and its allies have gone to the brink of war with North Korea. Misinterpretations and misunderstandings are fueling the crisis. "There is no country of comparable significance concerning which so many people are ignorant," American anthropologist Cornelius Osgood said of Korea some time ago. This ignorance may soon have fatal consequences. North Korea, South Korea is a short, accessible book about the history and political complexites of the Korean peninsula, one that explores practical alternatives to the current US policy: alternatives that build on the remarkable and historic path of reconciliation that North and South embarked on in the 1990s and that point the way to eventual reunification. |

The Survival of North Korea $35 Since the end of the Cold War, scholars and analysts have been predicting the collapse of the communist regime in North Korea. Yet, despite a deteriorating economy characterized by declining industrial output, outdated technology, and difficulty feeding its people, the country has been able to persist and continues to plod along. How has North Korea been able to survive, and how long can it last without significant change to its economic and political structures? How can we peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff through constructive dialogue? This book examines North Korea's survival strategy and offers practical solutions to a 50-year nuclear standoff through a series of essays written by 15 of the world's foremost scholars and leading experts on strategy, economics and international relations. It is essential reading for anyone interested in peace in Northeast Asia and will be invaluable in helping policy-makers, diplomats, politicians, researchers and other North Korea watchers to understand three closely related issues about North Korea: (1) why North Korea will continue to survive; (2) how the United States and North Korea can build a mutual confidence; and (3) why a dialogue is the only viable way to resolve the North Korea problem peacefully. |

Beyond North Korea (Paperback) $66.59 Why should Americans worry about South Korean security? The answer is clear: North Korea, and beyond. Most international attention to the North Korea problem has focused on U.S. policy, but South Korea`s longterm role may in fact be more important. South Korea`s security is vital to peace and stability, not only in Northeast Asia but also the wider world.Written by eminent scholars, practitioners, and policymakers with extensive on-the-ground experience, Beyond North Korea assesses the varied contexts ?regional and global, traditional and nontraditional ?that underpin South Korea`s varied security challenges. What are South Korea`s military requirements? How do relations with its neighbors enhance or undermine its position? What economic, environmental, and demographic factors come into play? This book reveals that South Korea`s national security rests as much on sound domestic policy choices as on successful interstate relations. |

Nuclear North Korea $21.99 Coming to the issues from different perspectives, the authors together have written an essential work of clear-eyed reflection and authoritative analysis. They refute a number of misconceptions and challenge faulty thinking that surrounds the discussion of North Korea, most important, the idea that North Korea is an irrational nation. Cha and Kang contend that however provocative, even deplorable, the North's behavior may at times be, it is not incomprehensible or incoherent. |

North Korea and Northeast Asia $44.91 A country of stark contradictions and puzzles, North Korea exhibits uncanny resilience in the face of external shocks and internal woes, raising important questions of theoretical and real-world significance. This volume offers a major reappraisal of the changing relationship between North Korea and its neighboring powers in the post-Cold War era in both theoretical and practical terms. The contributors examine the complex interplay of global, regional, and national forces that have influenced and shaped the changing patterns of conflict and cooperation in North Korea's relationships with China, Russia, and Japan and with the United States. Within the context of Northeast Asian geopolitics, the book tracks, explains, and assesses North Korea's survival strategies in both the security and economic domains, as well as the prospects of these strategies in the coming years. |
