Keeping coins around can be a way to store cash value. Coins can be easily hidden or many times stored in plain sight. They are a good way to keep money stashed for an emergency. They can also be a good way to save, building a pot of money for some significant purchase.
Keeping Coins In Plain Sight
Coins often have a perceived low value and are overlooked by many. Depending on who has access to your home (or where you are keeping your change) will impact how you keep your change. Primarily, those who already deal with changing in coins will most likely be attracted to a collection of coins that have a lot of silver coins. Not really silver mind you but the color silver, like dimes, nickels, and quarters. This leaves the lowly penny as the sole coin that hardly anyone wants. It may be a good idea to keep silver coins covered by pennies. Still, if your home has no traffic or only by those who see coins as a nuisance, then keeping a jar in plain site should be fine.
Keeping Coins Hidden
There are a number of good places in a home to hide coins. Any household cleaning product that is empty and has a lid can be used. Store it with other cleaning products. The upside is that one could collect change in an open location and as that fills up, transfer it to the main storage container on an as needed basis.
There are single coins that have high value. Maybe some collector mint condition irregular coins, special wheat pennies, or buffalo head nickels are worth saving by themselves. Then keeping those in a safe or safe deposit box would be in order.
Cashing In The Coins
Regardless if the coins are pennies, higher denominations, or special high value coins, to make them spendable one has to cash them in. Banks will do a coin count if you have an account with them, and it can take quite awhile if there is a lot them. Another option is a coin counting kiosk like CoinStar. However, CoinStar takes just over 8% of the value of coins counted. For special high value coins, submitting to a coin store may be quick, but one will not get full value. Better to take the time and put in an auction or sell at a coin show.
