Coin collecting, or numismatics, is a great hobby especially for youngsters, because it helps people learn about history. It can be very enjoyable going through a regular pile of common currency and find rare currency commingled therein.
Some rare coins have a certain cache, above and beyond their value. Such is the case with buffalo nickels. This coin was in circulation in the United States from 1913 to 1938. It hearkened back to the Wild West feeling of the open range. The artwork of the Native American Indian head on the front side and buffalo on the back side are telltale markers. Rare currency varieties include the three-legged buffalo and double-die versions.
Rare currency is scarce due to many different factors: age, minting limitations or some other unique characteristic. As time passes, more and more of the oldest coins disappear. They are sunk to the bottom of the ocean, lost in some landfill or are melted for their metal value. Some coins were only minted in very low quantities, for very limited times or for very specific purposes. Coins that were mistruck have unique characteristics that can greatly increase their value. The U.S. Mint attempts to catch these before delivery to the public, but it doesn't always catch them all and those that slip through become rare and valuable finds.
Coin dealers have a wealth of knowledge that can be easily unlocked with a couple of good questions. A good question to ask is, "What is a dollar?"
This question reveals how great a hobby like coin collecting can be. Money must have inherent value, signified by metal in coins, or represent value, such as pictures of leaders, in order to function as currency. When the United States was considering the name for its new currency, it wanted to demonstrate a fundamental bedrock of accepted value.
The Spanish Dollar, also referred to as "pieces of eight," was a core symbol of the European entrance into North and South America. The Spanish were the primary European powers in acquiring the gold and silver from these lands. Many pirates, companies and nations kept careful track of when the Spanish shipments of precious metals were being transported across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe.
According to the United States Coinage Act of 1792, the official value of $1 371 grains and four-sixteenth parts of a grain pure or 416 grains of standard silver, mirroring the Spanish dollar standards. The United States wanted to convince the world that its revolution would still be based on a well-accepted coinage model so that people would have faith in their money.

Nickels: A Tale of Dissociation $26.19 ..".a perfect genius that makes the impossible in expression, possible; theunknowable in experience, knowable" --Anya Achtenberg, author of "The Stories of Devil-Girl" "Nickels" follows a biracial girl named "Little Miss So and So," fromage 4-1/2 into adulthood. Told in a series of prose poems, "Nickels'"lyrical and inventive language conveys the dissociative states bornof a world formed by persistent and brutal incest and homophobia. The dissociative states enable the child's survival and, ultimately, the adult's healing. The story is both heartbreaking and triumphant.Nickels is the groundbreaking debut of Minneapolis-area authorand artist Christine Stark. "Christine Stark has crafted a language and a diction commensuratewith the shredding of consciousness that is a consequence ofchildhood sexual abuse. She brings us a wholly original voice in ariveting novel of desperation and love. Every sentence vibrates witha terrible beauty. Every sentence brings the news." --Patricia Weaver Francisco, author of "Telling: A Memoir of Rape and Recovery" "To be taken into the mind of a child can be an enchantingadventure, but to be taken into the mind of a child who isabused, confused, and taken for granted is a lingering, lividjourney. I applaud her fortitude to bring an olden--too long ignored--truth out of the darkness with blazing, innovative light." --MariJo Moore, author of "The Diamond Doorknob" "In "Nickels," Christine Stark, powerfully portrays the story of abuse and its impact on our lives. When this beautifully written and compelling story leaves, you are left wanting more. It's riveting; a book that will capture you from the beginning and carry you through the end. Everyone should read this book." --Olga Trujillo, author of "The Sum of My Parts" From the Reflections of America Series at Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.com Learn more at www.ChristineStark.com FIC044000 Fiction: Contemporary Women FIC018000 Fiction: Lesbian SOC010000 Social Science: Feminism & Feminist Theory |
