Gold is one of the oldest discoveries of metallurgy and its properties have been known to rich people and commoners alike. But what is it about gold that makes it so special with the entire human history from the ancient pharaohs to the modern electronics companies? Here are some facts about gold which may help answer this question.
Gold is one of the few indestructible metals. And by indestructible I do not mean "tough" in the traditional way - as in fact gold is among the most malleable metals around, and can be cut in sheets so thin that light passes through them. But I do mean "tough" in the sense that it cannot be decomposed by naturally occurring chemical reactions, neither attacked by the most vicious acids. In other words, it is chemically immune, with a few exceptions - is dissolves in mercury and it can naturally combine with other metals to produce alloys. Among the best known such metals are silver, copper, zinc, nickel, platinum and iron.
Gold has very good electrical-conductive properties, making it one of the best choices for use in the electronics industry. This comes from its high resistance to strong temperature variations and from its ability, or rather inability to oxidize in contact with water or air. Electronic printed circuitry boards of the highest quality use combinations of gold and other metals to obtain high resistance, quick, circuits for use in best electronic products on the market, from computers to DVD players and TV sets.
In medicine, gold has been used for a very long time, especially in dentistry, for its non-toxic properties. It is used in the production of medical instruments and surgical lasers and has even been employed to help stopping the spread of prostate cancer.
More recently, gold has been discovered to have excellent shielding properties against infrared radiation. That's why it has been used in the aeronautics and aero spatial industry to protect vital components of equipment against solar radiation. Due to the same property, thin layers of gold with 33% purity are used to coat the interior of space suits visors, thus protecting the eyes of cosmonauts against the same type of thermal radiation.
