By now, after several experimentations and proven successes on its application in different fields of study, we understand that in order for its distinct properties to reach optimal results, Nitinol must go through a regulated processing. Similarly, it is needed so that biocompatibility and resistance to optimal corrosion can be raised. Only when Nitinol implants goes through proper treatment that it become resistant to corrosion at the same time biocompatible.
Just like stainless steel alloy, Nitinol has the ability to deactivate itself which means that you don't have to apply another force just to revert it back to its original form. Thus, a solid oxide layer surface can be formed to protect its base material for corroding. Due to its high nickel content, nitinol was feared that it would dissolve when triggered by corrosion thus may lead to creating adverse effects. Meanwhile, other alloys containing above average level of nickel has shown significant biocompatibility which have been used in different applications such as orthodontics and cardiovascular.
There have been various studies and experiments that show the level of nickel released while nitinol implants are being performed. One study shows that its application could release an amount significantly below the average human dietary intake. This was the study about dental archwires using Nitinol wire. On another study, nickel release was measured by comparing Nitinol and fibroblast in stainless steel. Level of nickel was found to be higher in nitinol however was found significantly decreasing after a week. Although this was the case, toxicity was not achieved when the level of nickel increased.
In further studies, nickel release was also analyzed with the way it would react on surface tension. There were two types of polishing tested on this experiment, mechanical and electro polishing. It was demonstrated that excess nickel could be removed by using electro polishing process while it forms a titanium rich layer. On the contrary, a relatively high level of nickel was found using the mechanical polishing at the same time that the Ni-ion is increased.
Implant materials are graded by the FDA through a standard called F2129 which is a quantitative method that shows the resistance of corrosion. Breakdown potential is considered as the most relevant data extracted from this experimentation. High breakdown potential means that it is very stable and corrosion resistant. Despite the fact that there has been no standard limitation set, materials on a certain level is safe for implant since it is corrosion resistant. In order to assess surface influence, anodic polarization test was used.
Uniformity in oxidation is found to be significant in protecting corrosion to occur in the material. Oxide layer is found to be correlated with the thickness through electro polishing of Nitinol samples. Markers are usually attached to the struts of the stents to further improve the radio capacity of Nitinol stents. Nevertheless, the effects of galvanic corrosion must be considered when Nitinol is combined with other materials. Such markers are usually made from platinum and other materials with high density. No significant effect has been found in terms of corrosion resistance using Nitinol alloy.
