If you have ever owned a gold chain, you will have noticed numbers stamped upon the gold and perhaps you have wondered as to what these markings mean. The world over quality assurance for gold has been standardized and the question of quality is easily answered by looking at the hallmarks on the piece in question.
First off, lets discuss the difference between carats and karats. Really, there are none. This form of measure defines the quality of the gold in question. South Africa, Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand use the term carat, or its abbreviation, CT. Other countries like China, Europe, the United States of America and South East Asia speak of karats and use the abbreviation KT.
The idea of using carats to determine the quality of gold came from early Mesopotamia, where merchants used the seeds of the carob tree, named carubis, which weighed 0.2 grams and became a standard measure for weighing gold.
The caratage for gold is as follows:
9 CT = 375
14 CT = 585
18 CT = 750
22 CT = 916
The purity is measured thus:
10 CT = 41.7% pure
14 CT = 58.3% pure
18 CT = 75% pure
24 CT = 100% pure
If you are admiring a beautiful chain and the hallmark reads 916 or perhaps 585 you will have a good idea of the quality of the article in question. It certainly takes the guesswork out of shopping for a quality chain or other item. Do remember that the other alloys that are mixed into gold ensure that it is stronger and less malleable.
The purer the gold, the softer it is. Gold chains are available in all the variations, from 9 CT all the way up to 24 CT but what you purchase depends largely on your personal tastes, preferences and, naturally, your budget. The purer 24 CT gold will be more expensive than the available 9 CT gold chain on display in the jeweller's window.
It's also available in a variety of different colours. White gold is a mixture of gold and a white metal, usually palladium or nickel. Rose, often also red or pink gold, is so coloured due to the addition of copper alloy. This beautiful warm shade is used in specialized jewellery and chains. Green gold is a mixture of 75% gold and 25% silver, excluding any addition of copper. The resultant colour is a yellowish green tone.
Silver, manganese and copper added to create grey gold. Black gold does not merely refer to crude oil, but is in fact a patination, which occurs when sulphur and oxygen are applied to the surface. The electroplating method may also be used, utilizing black rhodium or the softer ruthenium, for a black finish.
Purple and blue gold is more brittle than the other types due to the use of aluminium and indium and this type of gold is less likely to be used on its own, but would rather be cut as a gem to be added to regular gold. So as you see, gold chains can be striking additions to your jewellery collection, offering an array of shades to choose from.
