There are a lot of reasons why collectors and investors should only buy certified coins. Out of all the reasons, some are more important then others. But, out of all the reasons, some are extremely obvious and others are not. Some of them may seem very surprising to you.
One reason why I do not buy uncertified coins is because I don't want to buy problems. A lot of these coins cannot be slabbed because they have problems that are not acceptable to PCGS or NGC. So, these collectibles lose their market value because they do not match up to other specimens. These problems can be, but are not limited to: bent, scratched, doctored, whizzed, cleaned, artificially toned, re-proofed, corroded, holed, punctured, excessively worn, porous, replated, painted, gold plated oins, altered etc, etc. These coins are very difficult to sell so you should not buy them.
Another reason why I only buy certified coins is because slabbed coins are cheaper. It's a known fact that certified coins are cheaper then uncertified coins. Let's say you buy a coin that looks MS65. And so, you pay $300 for a coin you think is worth $500. But, when you grade the coin, it comes back an MS64. So the coin is only worth $120. You just let yourself get ripped off. Remember that you always get what you pay for. It's obvious that nobody in their right mind would sell a $500 dollar coin for $300. If they would have made a lot more money grading the coin, they would have done so a long time ago. I would rather pay the extra money to make sure that I get the right grade. But, I'm just paying a little more to get what I want. That's a lot better then losing lots of money trying to get lucky. So overall, you save money buying the coins slabbed.
Another important reason to buy certified coins is to make sure that the coins are real. Many people buy counterfeit key dates thinking that they are real. But, the buyer will never know that the coin is real or fake unless they get it graded. By the time they find out that the coin is a fake, the seller is long gone. It happens all the time. Don't let it happen to you. Your safest bet is to buy your coins certified.
The last reason you should buy certified coins is because of investment purposes. It's obvious that slabbed collections are easier to sell. So, it costs less to liquidate them because they are more liquid. And, they usually sell for more money then uncertified collections. The reason is because serious collectors don't want to fork over $25k for a coin that they have to guess the grade. So, certified coins have a better return on your money. It is for this reason that I only buy certified coins.
I know that you cannot buy all of your coins certified. Some of them do not come slabbed. Proof sets are acceptable in their original packaging. It most instances, it is their original packaging that makes them worth more. There are many other coin collectibles that you cannot buy certified. Some of which are: original coin rolls, mint sets, GSA Morgan Dollars, coin bags, etc, etc. But if you can, you should always try to buy them slabbed. Buying raw coins is almost always a mistake because the costs almost always outweigh the benefits.
