Now that a new home business has opened that sells gold and silver collectible coins, it would be wise to know what the difference is between a collectible and a bullion coin.

But let's keep it very simple and easy to follow. Is there really a difference in gold or silver?

No, the gold or silver content is the same in both a bullion coin and a collector coin. However, the market values are usually vastly different. This is due to the condition and/or rarity of the coin. Common sense bears this out.

You can easily have two cars, two computers, two comic books or two baseball cards that are identical in their category but be in a different condition. Each has it own value depending on condition.

The Numis Network, a new home business company, has as their mainstream product line collectable coins. But not just any collectable coins, as they state "a MS70 ANACS certified Perfect Condition" coins. But what does that mean?

Simply put, a bullion coin is in general circulation. A bullion coin can be new or old. They can look so new and perfect as you hold it, however, have hidden blemishes that a non collector could not readily discern. New coins from the bank are considered bullion as well as an old one in your dresser drawer.

To help evaluate coins there are three main "agencies" of professional graders that give each individual coin a rating. The largest and most trusted coin grading services are ANACS, NGC, and PCGS. These services are recognized worldwide.

A coin that has been graded by one of these services is rating using a standard rating scale. It's called a Sheldon Scale. The Sheldon Scale has a MS rating. The ratings are from 1 to 70 with 70 being the highest.

A coin with a MS rating of 70 is considered a perfect coin. The difference in price between a MS69 and a MS70 could be astounding for non-collectors. Since only the perfect coins are given this rating, most collectors have these coins sealed and protected for preservation.

By the way, only about 1 out 10 newly minted coins from the US Mint are considered MS70.
