Maine has always been a State rich in pirate lore, and hidden treasure. Famous pirates like Captain Kidd, and Blackbeard were known to have frequented this area. And in the past, treasure hunters have located countless pirate hoards on both land and below the sea. However, the key to any found treasure is research. This article will start you on the right path, and in a moment you'll be reading about some areas that have been rumored to have buried treasures in Maine.
A useful tool to use when searching for hidden treasure is a metal detector. You don't need anything expensive with all of the bells and whistles either. You can purchase a reliable detector for between $300 and $400. If searching the beach areas of any ocean, most detectors work fine. If you plan on using your detector below the water you will need a water detector. Here are six places to begin your search for lost treasures in Maine.
Monroe Island is located in the western part of Penobscot Bay. For many years this island was used by pirates and thieves. There are supposedly many buried treasures
hidden on the island.
City of Portland Steamer wrecked on Monroe Island in the early 1880's.
It has been reported that some of the survivors buried gold and silver coins while waiting to be rescued from the island.
Haskell Island is located near Harpswell Neck. Pirates were known to frequent this island. Pirate treasure may be buried there.
Pond Island is located in Casco Bay. There are reports that small caches of gold and silver have been located on this island.
Swan's Island is located in the Kennebec River. Supposedly another pirate cache is buried on this island.
Smuttynose Island is located in York County. Reports are that Blackbeard the pirate buried a large treasure here.
It is important that you always ask for permission when entering private property. If you are going on to State or Federal Land, in search for lost treasure, be sure to check with your State laws about any digging.
