Fidel Castro has been the longest serving head of state in the world. This despite a concerted effort by the CIA and the United States Government to overthrow him or even assassinate him by what ever means available. To understand the relevance of Castro we have to look back to the era of the fifties of the last century. That was the era when the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy bolstered dictatorial regimes on Latin America. These regimes were hand in glove with American capitalists and exploited the local people and their resources.
The result of this exploitation was that the rich became richer and the poor remained where they were. Thus in Cuba also the same scenario prevailed as Batista the dictator at that time was a total stooge of the United States and himself lived an opulent life.Cuban industry and the sugar cane field and factories were all owned by multinationals and the common man never had it so bad. In addition Batista enforced a strict dictatorship and his opponents were either exiled or simply shot.
People who talk of those times as being better than the present in Cuba, are mostly ill-informed. Thus it was a matter of time before the moth-eaten state of Cuba under Batista supported by the USA collapsed. This is precisely what happened. Fidel Castro landed with fewer than a hundred men and marched towards Havana.. As he marched he was joined by many more so that as Fidel approached Havana the sheer numbers frightened Batista and his government collapsed.
Fidel seized power in Cuba. There is no doubt that he also became a dictator, but with a difference as he restored Cuban pride. He expelled the American multinationals and nationalized the sugar and other Industries. This had its fair share of hardship, but over all the standing of Cuba in the international community rose significantly. The people also benefitted to an extant.
Fidel imposed a communist regime and the United States was alarmed. It authorised an invasion by Cuban exiles with CIA support but the invasion collapsed. Known as the 'Bay of Pigs' fiasco the results surprised Kennedy. There was no doubt that Castro had a degree of popularity in Cuba.
Over the decades all efforts of the CIA and the USA came to naught as Castro continued in power. He showed that a small nation with determined and nationalistic agenda can defy the USA.It had never happened before and the Monroe Doctrine had its first failure. Cuba is now slowly changing as Fidel has retired. But his name will remain as the eternal revolutionary who defied the capitalists of the United States and gave dignity to the ordinary Cubans.

Monroe Doctrine $25.57 A Concise History of the (In)Famous Doctrine that Gave Rise to the American Empire A succinct, analytical history of the Monroe Doctrine from its inception in 1823 to its broad extension in the early twentieth century, this book explains in vivid detail this cornerstone of American foreign policy. Covering more than a century of history, Jay Sexton, who teaches American history at the University of Oxford, explores the varying conceptions of the doctrine as its meaning was distorted over the course of decades to further an ever-expanding American empire. When in 1823 President Monroe issued his vaguely worded declaration that the United States would not allow European states to further colonize the western hemisphere, America had little means of enforcing it. The doctrine proclaimed anticolonial priciples, yet it rapidly became the myth and means for subsequent generations of politicians to pursue expansionist foreign policy agendas. Time and again, debates on the key issues of nineteenth- and earlytwentieth-century foreign relations--expansion in the 1840s, the imperialism of 1898, entrance into World War I and the League of Nations--were framed in relation to the Monroe Doctrine. In Sexton's adroit hands, the doctrine provides a new lens from which to view the still-unresolved question at the center of American diplomatic history: the nation's contradictory traditions of anticolonialism and imperialism. |

The Monroe Doctrine $26.75 Leadership is the key to excellence. And leadership can be learned. Thank goodness, because many people who fall into managerial positions haven't the foggiest notion how to lead. They don't feel driven to attain the competencies of a boss--much less a great boss. Lorraine Monroe is a born leader. She caught the bug early, as secretary of the student council in the fourth grade at P.S. 157 in Central Harlem. She went on to found the Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem, a remarkably successful and innovative public school, and became one of the most respected education reformers in America. Now Monroe translates her extensive experience in New York City public schools into the Monroe Doctrine to show other education and business leaders how to create and maintain high-achieving organizations. THE MONROE DOCTRINE offers readers concrete lessons in the craft of leadership. Its brief, catchy lessons and anecdotes will help potential leaders tap into their natural gifts and harness those gifts to lead seemingly by instinct. Monroe's personal story of conquering the most overwhelming challenges will inspire leaders of all types to try new ideas to enrich their lives and the lives of their organizations. With THE MONROE DOCTRINE by their side, readers will be able to lead any organization--whether a hospital, a house of worship, a sorority, a family, a school, or a business--with renewed passion and results. |

The Monroe Doctrine (Paperback) $25.46 President James Monroe’s 1823 message to Congress declaring opposition to European colonization in the Western Hemisphere became the cornerstone of nineteenth-century American statecraft. Monroe’s message proclaimed anticolonial principles, yet it rapidly became the myth and means for subsequent generations of politicians to pursue expansionist foreign policies. Time and again, debates on the key issues of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century foreign relations—expansion in the 1840s, Civil War diplomacy, the imperialism of 1898, entrance into World War I, and the establishment of the League of Nations—were framed in relation to the Monroe Doctrine. In Jay Sexton’s adroit hands, the Monroe Doctrine provides a new lens through which to view the paradox at the center of American diplomatic history: the nation’s interdependent traditions of anticolonialism and imperialism. |

The Monroe Doctrine: The Cornerstone of American Foreign Policy / $18.35 In 1823, President James Monroe proclaimed that European powers should not be permitted to interfere in the affairs of the sovereign states of the Americas. However, in 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt added the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, which effectively allowed the U.S. to intervene in Latin American affairs. |

Hemispheric Imaginings: The Monroe Doctrine and Narratives of U.S. Empire $26.43 In 1823, President James Monroe announced that the Western Hemisphere was closed to any future European colonization and that the United States would protect the Americas as a space destined for democracy. Over the next century, these ideas--which came to be known as the Monroe Doctrine--provided the framework through which Americans understood and articulated their military and diplomatic role in the world. "Hemispheric Imaginings" demonstrates that North Americans conceived and developed the Monroe Doctrine in relation to transatlantic literary narratives. Gretchen Murphy argues that fiction and journalism were crucial to popularizing and making sense of the Doctrine's contradictions, including the fact that it both drove and concealed U.S. imperialism. Presenting fiction and popular journalism as key arenas in which such inconsistencies were challenged or obscured, Murphy highlights the major role writers played in shaping conceptions of the U.S. empire. Murphy juxtaposes close readings of novels with analyses of nonfiction texts. From uncovering the literary inspirations for the Monroe Doctrine itself to tracing visions of hemispheric unity and transatlantic separation in novels by Lydia Maria Child, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Lew Wallace, and Richard Harding Davis, she reveals the Doctrine's forgotten cultural history. In making a vital contribution to the effort to move American Studies beyond its limited focus on the United States, Murphy questions recent proposals to reframe the discipline in hemispheric terms. She warns that to do so risks replicating the Monroe Doctrine's proprietary claim to isolate the Americas from the rest of the world. |
