Coin collecting is a hobby many people eagerly participate in. Apart from being interesting, the hobby can be rewarding as well. In fact, many people have started viewing the hobby as an investment. Investors have looked at the potential in the hobby by studying the constant increase in the values of coins, especially rare coins.
Put simply coin collecting is the assembling or trading of coins. Coins which were in circulation for only a brief amount of time or coins commemorating a special event are more rare hence have a higher value. Coin collecting is also known as "The Hobby of the Kings," because history shows us that many kings collected coins, including the likes of Pope Boniface VIII, Louis XIV of France and Henry IV of France.
Between August 15th and August 18th, 1962, the first international convention for coin collectors took place in Detroit, Michigan. The American Numismatic Association and the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association sponsored the event which was attended by an estimated 4,000 people.
While talking about the definition of coin collecting, we should also note that although many people consider it the same, numismatism is defined as the science of coins under an economic, legislative, metrological and artistic point of view. It is differentiated from simple coin collecting, which is not essentially a study of the currency but rather is only a hobby.
Usually the interest in the hobby is sparked from coins that people receive during circulation. Often, people tend to go abroad and start growing fond of different forms of currencies and eventually start collecting them. Sometimes the desire to collect coins can turn into an obsession turning you into an absolutely astute coin collector. Louis Eliasberg is credited as the only person who has managed to collect all known coins of the United States of America and assemble them in a set.
The activity can also take the form being highly competitive as numismatic grading services publish registry sets, which are sets of coins assessed according to their numerical grade and completeness. The Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) are two of the most prominent numismatic grading services. The value of the coin is primarily determined by its rarity and its condition. The grading services have devised systems to grade the condition of the coin accordingly.
Coins can be collected according to various categories. The most popular way to categorize coins is by country. Other methods include categorizing chronologically, by type, by color or by theme. However, what type of coins will be collected depends on the collector entirely. The methods of collecting coins differ as well. People who do not put much effort into checking the authenticity of coins often lose out at the hands of people selling counterfeit coins. Other people travel rigorously around the world collecting coins and adding them to their set. There are many places where rare coins can be bought at a hefty price. People buy these coins to make sure their sets are complete or to invest in them to reap future profits. Coin collectors meticulously maintain their coins to make sure their condition is not blemished as that would result in a loss of value of the coin. Coin collecting aficionados regard the activity as an art worthy of their precious time and effort.
Jamie Singer has been collecting coins for a little over 20 years now. He has built up a large collection containing some of the most rare coins to be found. During this time he has built up a wealth of knowledge which he is now sharing on his website http://www.coincollectingrevealed.com/.
