Understanding and mastering the E-mini S&P 500
E-mini S&P 500 futures are the miniature version of the larger S&P 500. e-mini S&P 500 futures are what day traders call the E-minis. E-mini S&P 500 futures are traded online and the larger contract is normally traded on Wall Street, however can be traded online as well. Having access to trading online gives a trader more freedom, flexibility, and ability to view more trade charts and indicators than if trading on the floor or Wall Street. The 'e' in E-mini S&P 500 futures simply stand for 'electronic'.
These online trading instruments are used day in and day out by professional day traders trading the e-minis. You don't have to risk a big capital in day trading E-minis like you do with the S&P 500. And if trading through the day, rather than holding a position overnight, a day trader can trade contract margins as low as $500 compared to overnight margins around $3500. An account with only $3K or less can be created for you by an E-mini S&P 500 futures broker. A lot of folks have a go in trading these since it can be really rewarding for people that have mastered it.
But what exactly is day trading? Some folks may think this is self-explanatory, but this could not always be so. Day trading does not refer to trading every day though there are traders that take more than one trade every if not every day. What day trading really means is that the trader closes his position the same day he opened it which is by the end of the daily trading session. The session period in day trading is much like the regular stock trading session. Day traders trading YM should close their positions the latest being by 5 PM EST since this is the end of the daily trading session of most electronically traded US stock index futures.
You should close your position by the end of the daily trading session since the overnight session starts right after and the E-mini S&P 500 futures margins kick in. This suggests that if your account is tiny, you may not keep it overnight since what's involved are margins that may be numerous times larger than those permitted for day trading.
