So you've decided that you're going to tile a room in your house. You've chosen the perfect tile for that room, but you're wondering what else is needed. There are a few different materials you will also need to purchase as well. Let's go over them right now.
The first and most important material is the mortar. Remember that floor tile mortar is different from regular mortar, so don't just go and buy the cheapest stuff. Depending on what you are tiling on and what/if you are putting a subfloor down, will determine what type of mortar you need to purchase. If you are going with ¾" construction grade plywood, make sure to buy mortar that works with that. Some tile mortars are specifically used for concrete floors, and won't work well with plywood. As well, visa versa is also true, just make sure you know what you need and read the labels carefully.
Putting down a mesh subfloor (normally used if the floor isn't very level), make sure to get the scratch coat mortar which is not very expensive at all. Laying Schluter DITRA? You'll need to buy modified and non-modified mortar. Going with concrete board? Make sure to buy the appropriate screws and mortar for that.
Something I want to add, please, please, please don't buy the premixed type of mortar. Though there are some guys out there that swear by it, I can tell you, by experience (at least it was in my house and not on a job), that the stuff is not meant for floor tile. There are several reasons for this: It takes a long time to dry, sometimes up to a week. If any water touches it, it reverts back to its original "gooey" form (not good if you need a solid floor). This and a few other reasons are why I would highly recommend NOT using that product on the floor.
Let's say that before you went to your home building store, you also noticed that the floor isn't quite as flat as it should be. You'll need floor leveler to fix that problem. Once again, make sure to read the label on what type to buy. And when you mix and pour the stuff out, make sure you can pour it out as you want those products to flow well. This will almost guarantee that it will find the low spot in the floor and level itself (once again, I've tried the other way - not fun).
Choosing the right grout and sealer is another important part of choosing what materials to buy. You don't need to have the more expensive of either one, but I usually recommend you go with a mid grade at the very least. Sanded grout if the spacing between the tiles is greater than 1/8", and non-sanded if the spacing is 1/8" or less OR you're laying marble or granite tile. As an aside, make sure to keep your spacing at the most 1/8" for marble and granite, 1/16" is recommended.
Besides those crucial materials, don't forget to purchase screws if you're putting a plywood subfloor down, roofing nails if you're going with mesh (or you can use a pneumatic nailer with staples). Also buying and using tile spacers is normally recommended. Finally, don't forget to have fun with your tiling project!
