How long will we continue to fool ourselves into believing that a casino, bar, or pub can bend our social and moral values? Come on, it's time to face the reality! Human beings have the ability to think, analyze, and decide what is right and what is wrong. Therefore, it is us who are responsible for degrading or upgrading our social and moral values. The fact is that a casino is like any other workplace; it provides jobs to thousands of unemployed people. Therefore, in a place where more than 20 percent of the population is jobless and their only ray of hope is a casino, contemplating on the impacts of a casino just does not seem right. You see, there are always two sides of a coin; it is up to you to figure out what is more important for the society in Sturgis Michigan and the surrounding area.
Another thing that you clearly need to distinguish is the difference between speculation and fact. The point that a casino can pollute the area and destroy social and moral values of a society is pure speculation. It is a topic that can have endless debates without any outcome. However, the fact is that thousands of people are unemployed in an area and do not have money to buy one square meal. The fact is that these people have not seen happiness for a long time. The fact is that these people hate themselves for not being able to fill their children's stomachs. The fact is that these people die a slow death everyday and do not want tomorrow to come. The fact is that these people cry everyday when they are alone. The fact is that these people want a job and want to live just like you do. Is that asking for too much? Taking into account these facts, how can people block their only ray of hope? In a place where there are no other means of earning money, stopping a casino from being built is not justified.
Come to think of it, the construction of a casino can generate 1000 to 1200 temporary jobs. After the casino is constructed and is operational, it will provide anything between 2000 to 2400 permanent jobs. How does this make the casino a culprit? In fact, it is a blessing in disguise to all the jobless individuals who are in desperate need for money. Can you be heartless enough to oppose the building of a casino and deprive these jobless people of the only source of income? Can you be selfish enough to consider the social impacts of a casino far more important than the feelings of all the jobless people? Thinking just about us is something that each and every person does. Let us take a step ahead and think about all those unemployed people who want to live a normal life just like we do. Let us help them in getting a job so that they can fill their stomachs everyday. Let us bring smiles to the faces of all our jobless neighbors. Let's do it this time.
Mark West is a researcher and advocate for the Sturgis Needs Jobs Website. After a proposal was submitted to develop a very large scale Sturgis casino [http://sturgisneedsjobs.com] that would create thousands of jobs in an area where more than 20 percent of the population is unemployed and our Michigan Representatives have opposed the development, he writes to help his fellow citizens who are deprived of basic needs such as a job. He writes to defend the only chance that the jobless people have to earn legitimate money and put food on their table. Help Sturgis and the neighboring community in their struggle for existence. It is time we stand united and fight for our basic right, the right to survive. Visit the website and learn more about the ultimate weapon against unemployment at---> [http://sturgisneedsjobs.com]

West of 16w by Slomiany, Mark [Paperback] $25.94 A quarterlife crisis as told through the scrolling tableau of the American landscape Based on his own quarterlife crisis and subsequent crosscountry journey, WEST OF 16W explores the societal fears and pressures that threaten to drown the seedling aspirations of todays 20somethings striving for more than instant material wealth. Meet Mark, the son of immigrants, whose need to fulfill familial expectations led to a life of hard study culminating in a Ph.D. by his mid20s. Yet underneath the disciplined scientist facade, Mark had always dreamed of traveling the country and writing great novels. And so, with diploma in hand and love life in shambles, Mark hits the road to explore his longsuppressed literary aspirations. Set amongst the uncertainty of post9/11 America, WEST OF 16W takes us into the quarterlife crisis of a young man as told through the scrolling tableau of the American landscape. From the deep south of Charleston, to his North Jersey hometown, to the west coast by bus, the novel is as much an introspective journey as crosscountry adventure as Mark seeks balance between familial expectations, personal aspirations, and the affection of the woman he loves. West of the West $30.96 Teddy Roosevelt once exclaimed, "When I am in California, I am not in the West, I am west of the West," and in this book, Mark Arax sets out to explain just what TR meant. His is a compelling, sometimes ominous portrait of a place and its people who are often surviving on the edge, reliving history, and losing their way in the promised land: "The Summer of the Death of Hilario Guzman" is a deeply-felt portrait of an immigrant family from Oaxaca, followed through harrowing border crossings and raisin harvests; "The Last Okie of Lamont," (the inspiration for the town featured in The Grapes of Wrath) has only one Okie left, who tells Arax his life story as he drives to a funeral to bury one more Dust Bowl migrant; and "Highlands of Humboldt" is a visit to the marijuana growing capital of the U.S., where the local bank collects a sizeable daily deposit of cash, most of which reeks of marijuana. Combining hard-hitting reporting and stellar writing, Arax captures both the atmosphere of social upheaval and the sense of being rooted in a community. Once you meet the people portrayed in this book, you won't forget them. |

The Second Mark $17.26 It was billed as the greatest event in the history of pair skating: three of the best teams of all time battling for Olympic gold on one night in Salt Lake City. Technical ability was approximately equal. It was the artistic merit score that would decide the gold medal -- the second mark. Representing Canada, China, and Russia, the three pairs illuminated their distinct cultures. On the second mark, whose culture would triumph? Would it be the beauty of the Russians' ballet on ice, the thrill of the Chinese pair's heart-stopping acrobatics, or the Canadians' passionate connection with the audience? In a down-to-the-wire nail-biter, the difference between gold and silver came down to the vote of a single judge. Hours later, a bombshell: the confession of a French judge unleashed a worldwide debate -- and ultimately produced an unprecedented duplicate gold medal. The Second Mark reveals what an athlete really goes through to become the best in the world, through the riveting stories of unforgettable people. We meet Yelena Berezhnaya of Russia, who survives emergency brain surgery after a near-fatal training accident and makes it back to the Olympics in less than two years. We meet Zhao Hongbo, a young boy skating in subzero weather in remotest China, who will fulfill his coach's twenty-year dream of catching up to the West. And we meet two Canadians, a barista and a concession stand worker, who had almost quit the sport before deciding to give it one last try -- and becoming world champions. Exhaustively researched by a skating insider, The Second Mark takes readers deep into the world of the Olympic athlete, illuminating the fascinating differences between East and West. From the frozen fields of China to the secret corridors of the old Soviet sports system, from a tiny farm village in remotest Quebec to the judges' backstage world, The Second Mark tells the compelling human stories behind one of the most controversial nights in Olympic history. |
