Lusterous Red

Diamonds have always been thought of as white and extremely lustrous gems. White diamonds are clear because it has a very small amount of imperfections. Colored diamonds, on the other hand, possess flaws in their structure and other chemicals which impart the coloration.
Due to this property, it is natural to think of colored diamonds as being cheaper than the white ones. This is not always the case, however.
It's quite rare to come across a diamond with absolutely no imperfection - in other words, a diamond that's flawless. It's just that these white diamonds have less of these foreign bodies and flaws in cutting. Colored diamonds, although not perfect either, sometimes cost more than the white varieties because of how rare they are.
Take for example the world-famous Hope Diamond. It is a deep blue gem that isn't at all brilliantly cut, yet is valued at more than $200 million. Of course, one has to also consider its size - all 45.52 carats of it. But for all intents and purposes, it is still highly coveted, and this just goes to show that a diamond's color is a sure determinant of its value.
A few of the most popular colored diamonds, aside from the Hope Diamond, are the Transvaal Blue, the Conde Pink, the Sultan of Morocco, the Tiffany Yellow, the Great Chrysanthemum, the Agra, and the Dresden Green. These are what are known as "fancy colored diamonds" and cost much more than irradiated gems.
Fancy colored diamonds are extremely valuable. The Dresden Green, for one, is the world's largest green diamond, with 40.7 carats. Pound for pound, one of the most expensive colored diamonds is a red rectangular-cut fancy colored diamond, which sold at Christie's in 2001 for $536,000 per carat.
How colored diamonds are graded
Diamond colors are graded using an alphabet scale - that is, letters D through Z. The most favored are of course diamonds graded D, of which the largest known is The Centenary. Fancy colored diamonds sometimes do not fit into this scale proposed by the Gemological Institute of America.
The most common colored diamonds [http://www.topdiamondsguide.com/category/sparkling-diamonds] are of yellow and brown shades while the rarest colred diamonds are those that are red or purple. Naturally colored blue and green stones are quite rare and lightly colored diamonds - those tinted light blue or pink - are irradiated to make their colors more intense.
The process of irradiation is undergone by subjecting the cut and polished gems to low fields of radiation. This process darkens the outer part of the stone until a more intense hue is achieved all the way round the gem.
