alley plantation is located north of the Mississippi River from New Orleans. On both sides of the river were large farms cane sugar (plantation here), where the owners built mansions for themselves, while their slaves, who worked in the fields, living in poverty of the slums. Many properties were destroyed by fire or flood "Old Man River." Most of the existing ones have been restored and offer tours.
The first planting of the West Bank was Laura. This is a plantation Creole built in 1805. Tours are based on memories of Laura Locoul, who had lived there and in the French Quarter. Tales from Compere Rabbit were stories in the slave quarters on this plantation and later writing for posterity.
Next is planting the most photographed of all, Oak Alley. Twenty-eight majestic oak trees line the entry way at home. River Road passes through it and a dike was built to control river flooding. The view of the river in the 1800s must have been magnificent. It is even spectacular today. I was told that Hurricane Katrina has destroyed some of the majestic oaks.
On the eastern shore River plantations are restored San Francisco, Ormond, and Destrehan. The war of 1812 started near New Orleans, rather than in it found. The fact is that in 1805, Haiti abolished slavery. Some French settlers took their slaves from Haiti and moved to the east bank of the Mississippi, where they grew sugar cane and retained their previous way of life. The slaves had felt the stirrings of freedom while in Haiti. Some of them felt that if they could get together, they could be a force to be reckoned with. In 1811, a group of slaves fugitives to their masters until the South River and began traveling to New Orleans, where they hoped they could capture and negotiate their freedom with the British colonies who wanted to return. Along the way, the group has won many slaves from other plantation slaves and other fugitives who have heard of their mission. A significant cache of weapons and ammunition has been waiting alongside the road. To some reason, they were betrayed and the cache was not there. They were captured, tested at Destrehan Plantation (now a B & B) and condemned. What was the outcome of the war if they had succeeded?
