A true leader always takes responsibility for whatever occurs under his "watch." All too often, we see some supposed leader try to absolve himself of responsibility by "throwing someone under the bus." We see this occur over and over again in government, in politics, and in organizations. I have previously published an Associated Content article called The Blame Game, but it is important to understand that anyone who blames others can never be considered a true leader!
Leaders take charge. They identify a need or a goal, and set a direction for their organization to take during their administration or tenure in office. True leaders always are the first ones to step forward and volunteer to take care of anything that is needed. True leaders can never be tentative! By definition, leadership means leading. I have witnessed countless "leaders" who believed that "passive leadership," was the best approach, often because they claimed that they did not want to "impose" their opinion or point-of-view on the organization. Yet, that is exactly what leadership demands - - that a leader step forward, even if it is uncomfortable, even if at times it means being adversarial, even if it means stepping out his "comfort zone," - - to lead!
Leaders never say, "it's not my job," or "It's not my fault." Leaders identify what needs to be done, and either finds someone competent to delegate the duty to, or gets it done himself. Leaders must be willing to "roll their sleeves up," and "get their fingers dirty." Leaders must have a working knowledge of every aspect of their organization, while not necessarily doing every duty. If a leader, however, does not have the working knowledge, how then will he be able to ask the necessary "tough questions" to assure that everything that is needed gets done.
Some leaders fear that they will be accused of "micromanaging" if they get involved and question and ask. However, a true leader realizes that only those who don't fully understand the needs of being an
effective leader ever accuse anyone in leadership of micromanaging, simply because he is "hands-on.." Invariably, leaders who are not "hands-on" have many more mishaps occur during their tenure than "hands-on" leaders, yet I am amazed how often I hear that lazy cliche regarding micromanagement. There is a big difference between micromanagement and effective "hands-on" leadership. Micromanaging is having to get involved in every minute detail, while "hands-on" management is controlling the effectiveness and direction.
Many more leaders do not assume responsibility than those that do. Those that take the responsibility are true leaders, and almost always, more effective leaders. The "blamers" are usually the "leaders that have so many things go wrong, or nothing at all occur, during their tenure. If you want to be an effective leader, take charge and take the responsibility. Leaders do not fear leadership - - "blamers" do!
