New York city, New York is the most famous city in America and among the most famous in the entire world. It pulls in millions of tourists every year and subsequently billions of dollars due to the plethora of shows, statues, buildings, museums and other historical landmarks and attractions. If you're visiting NYC anytime in the near future, there are certain things you have to do while there.
In no particular order, here are the top ten things you must do in New York.
One
See the Statue of Liberty. This pure copper statue, standing 305-feet tall (in total from ground to torch), was a gift from the French, commemorating America's freedom. Since arriving in New York in 1886 and being reconstructed, piece by piece, millions of visitors-around 3 million annually for the past few decades-have walked up the stairs inside the statue and peered out at the city from inside.
Two
Catch a show on Broadway. Broadway Theatre is quintessential "New York." The building has an impressive 40 large theaters with over 500 seats and is located in Manhattan's Theatre District. Many visitors think "Broadway" isn't their cup of tea, until they realize that it's not all Cats and Chicago playing. There are many various shows and musicals happening on Broadway - something for everyone's taste.
Three
Try the Pizza! Although originating in Italy, New York pizza has been considered among the best in the world. New York chefs constantly take home prizes for their pizzas, and if you're in New York, you must grab a slice and see what you've been missing.
Four
Walk around Times Square. This is the central hub of New York, and it's awfully busy, no matter what time of year. Whether it's a New Year's Eve show going off hosted by Dick Clark, or just another Tuesday in the city, Times Square is the heartbeat of the city.
Five
Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. Although there are many museums to see in New York, Madame Tussaud's is very different from what you'd expect. Instead of dealing in artifacts and other brands of memorabilia, this museum immortalizes famous pop-culture celebrities in wax. Stop in and see if you can tell the difference from wax and real.
Six
Shop the Time Warner Center. Okay, maybe you don't have to shop anything - as it's right expensive. But the Time Warner Center is one of the best "malls" on the East coast of the US. Located at Central Park, the Time Warner Center features many of New York's best shops and restaurants.
Seven
Tour the City. Truthfully, there's just so much to see in New York that, in order to spell it all out, you'd need a top-500 list. Take a stroll through the West Side, Central Park, or find a horse-pulled carriage to take you on a tour of the entire city.
Eight
See the Empire State Building. New York is called the Empire State, and this is immortalized by the actual building. At one time, this was the tallest building in the world, and by visiting the ESB, you'll be in close proximity to others of the city's biggest attractions, like the Chrysler Building.
Nine
Visit Carnegie Hall. This venue is a concert hall-slash-shopping mall-slash restaurant. Basically, it's a national institution, and no trip to New York would be complete without stepping foot in the world-famous concert hall.
Ten
See 30-Rock. 30 Rockefeller Plaza is one of the most famous buildings in the city. It signals the end of one era and the start of another, evidenced by the old-style buildings located on either side of the gigantic building. The observation decks offer some of the best views in the city.

Liberty $3.95 A national holiday in Lake Wobegon is always gaudy and joyful. But what is going on between Clint Bunsen and Miss Liberty? Clint Bunsen is one of the old reliables in Lake Wobegona the treasurer of the Lutheran church and the auto mechanic who starts your car on below-zero mornings. For six years he has run the Fourth of July parade, turning what was once a line of pickup trucks and girls pushing baby carriages that hold their cats into an event of dazzling spectacle. Blazing bands, marching units, cannons, horses, a fireworks show, and the famous Living Flagaone thousand men and women wearing red, white, or blue, standing in formationahave attracted the attention of CNN and prompted the governor to put in an appearance as well. The town is dizzy with anticipation. Until, that is, they hear of Clintas ambition to run for Congress. Theyare embarrassed for him. They know him too wellahis unfortunate episodes involving vodka sours, his rocky marriage. And then there is his friendship, or whatever it is, with the twenty-four-year-old girl who dresses up as the Statue of Liberty for the parade. Itas rumored that underneath those robes she is buck naked, and that her torch contains a quart of booze. Itas Lake Wobegon as itas always beenagood loving people who drive each other crazy. |

Liberty: Rethinking an Imperiled Ideal $27 "Liberty is a dangerous concept. It??'s sure to be misused and, if left unchecked, will likely bring not social harmony and happiness but their opposites. Nonetheless, liberty is absolutely necessary: without it there can be no authentic community. People are not free to do the right thing unless they are free to do the wrong thing; if they can???t be wrong, they can???t be right. >Thus does Glenn Tinder, in this provocative work, argue emphatically for ???negative liberty??? ? the liberty that wants primarily to be left alone, with the authorities interfering as little as possible in the lives of people ? and against ???positive liberty??? ? a liberty that seeks to guide people into a ???fulfilling??? life. >One of America's major thinkers on Civic life, Tinder approaches the ideal of liberty with a blend of pervasive pessimism and strong optimism. He writes from an open, nondogmatic Christian point of view, believing strongly in reason and in the primary importance of free communication and dialogue, and he insists that Christians can learn from such non-Christians as Nietzsche, Freud, and Marx. >The substance of Tinder??'s book lies at the intersection of several major themes ? communication, human fallenness, the necessity of liberty, standing alone, and eschatology ? each considered in light of learning what liberty truly is and how it will affect the world at large." |
