The City of 300 Bridges
Saint Petersburg is located in the North Western Federal District of Russia on the Neva river. It was formerly known as Petrograd and Leningrad.
St Petersburg has been dubbed the Venice of the North for its palace-lined waterways. Sculpted by islands and the sinuous Neva River, the city is a vista of geometric elegance.
It is often called The City of 300 Bridges. It is built on what originally was more than 100 islands created by a maze of rivers, creeks, canals and other bodies of water, with the Neva river being the main waterway.
This city has the largest number of Bridges of any city in the world, even more than Venice or Amsterdam, with a total of 539 bridges. The widest bridge in the world belongs to Russia in St Petersburg, called Siniy Most or in English Blue Bridge. It was designed in 1818 and is built out of cast iron. The first bridge in St. Petersburg was built in 1703 and the longest bridge is the Alexander Nevsky.
The most popular shopping streets in St Petersburg are Sadovaya Street and Nevsky Prospect. There are lots of various shops, located on streets close to Nevsky. For example, one of the biggest and oldest department stores, is DLT.
The Museum of St. Petersburg History. Peter & Paul Fortress was founded by Peter I in 1703. Besides the ancient fortifications, on the grounds of the fortress one can visit the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral of the early XVIII century with the burial vault of Peter the Great and other Russian tsars, the museum in Trubetskoy bastion prison, expositions, The History of St. Petersburg, The History of the Imperial Mint, Pechatnya, museum on cosmonautics and missilery, excursion route Panorama of the Neva over the roofs of the fortress bastions and curtains. From the middle of the 18th century St. Peter and Paul Fortress contained Russias political prison.
The night life in St. Petersburg is vibrant and when the sun goes down, the city starts to party. The music scene is diverse and colourful and the capital boasts a great diversity of casinos, high quality bars, and night clubs. Prices are very affordable in comparison to those in any other large European city, including Moscow and good venues are not hard to find. The majority of the new nightspots are in the area between Ligovsky Prospkekt, Vasilievsky Island.
The most respected and admired forms of entertainment in St. Petersburg are the Ballet and the Opera. The Ballet and opera mix freely in the calendar schedule throughout the year and although both the Ballet and Opera companies do tour, one of the companies will be performing in St Petersburg.
