Author: Rainer, Erihs J. G. Latvian War of Independence

The Latvian War of Independence, sometimes called the Latvian War of Liberation (Latvian: Latvijas brvbas cas, literally, the Struggles for Latvias freedom, or Latvijas atbrvoanas kar, War of Latvian Liberation ), was a series of military conflicts in Latvia between 5 December 1918, after the Republic of Latvia proclaimed its independence, and the signing of the Treaty of Riga between the Republic of Latvia and the Russian SFSR on August 11, 1920. The war involved Latvia (its provisional government was supported by Estonia, Poland, and the Western Allies, particularly the United Kingdom) against the Russian SFSR and the Bolsheviks shortlived Latvian Socialist Soviet Republic. Germany and the United Baltic Duchy added a new level of intrigue, initially being nominally allied to the Nationalist/Allied force, but attempting to jockey for German domination of Latvia. Eventually, the tensions flared up after a German coup against the Latvian government and led to open war. Following a ceasefire, the Germans developed a ploy, nominally dissolving into the West Russian Volunteer Army led by general Pavel Bermont Avalov. Brainstorm (Latvian Band)

Brainstorm (Latvian Band)

$111.53

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Brainstorm is a successful Latvian pop/rock band. The band became popular internationally in 2000, when they finished third in the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 with the song My Star. The band was formed in the summer of 1989 in Jelgava, Latvian SSR by four former classmates Renrs Kaupers, Jnis Jubalts, Gundars Mauevics and Kaspars Roga. Soon after, their underclassman Mris Mihelsons also joined the band. The title of the band was taken from what one old foreign lady said about their music, who characterized it as a brainstorm. In September 1992 Brainstorm released their first single Jo tu nc (Because You Come) and finished 9th in the most popular Latvian music contest, the Michrophones questionnaire. After this came their first album, Vairk nek skai (More than Loud) 1993. The most popular song from that album is Ziema (Winter), which has also a video. 1994 was the quietest period in the bands history, although this year they released maxisingle Vietu nav (No Vacancies ) with only 500 copies. A translating dictionary, like this one, is a practical dictionary that translates words in existing texts. It does not, as a rule, provide descriptions or explanations, nor does it set norms of how words should be spelled. The aim of dictionary users can be either to understand the source language (the language of the headwords) or to translate it into the target language(the language of the translation equivalents). The user's first language can be either the source language or the target language. This makes for four possible types of interlingual dictionaries (descriptive, prescriptive, or translating). Existing Latvian-English dictionaries indicate that they are intended for users whose first language is Latvian and whose purpose is to translate it into English. This dictionary is intended primarily for users whose first language is English and who wish to understand texts written in Latvian. This, of course, does not preclude Latvian speakers from using it to translate from Latvian into English, i.e., to produce English texts. English-speaking Latvians may, in fact, find it helpful for accurate and natural translation.

English-speaking Latvians may, in fact, find it helpful for accurate and natural translation. Other features of this dictionary are: the number of entries(over 106,000), which is more than double that of any other Latvian-English dictionary; the use of American rather than British English; an extensive coverage of technical terms from all fields of science and technology; the comprehensive inclusion of spelling variants; and the inclusion of colloquialisms, common speech words, vulgar terms, slang, barbarisms, selected regionalisms, and terms found in folkloric language. A dictionary of Latvian proverbs is included in the back. The entries of this dictionary were collected from various extant monolingual and bilingual Latvian dictionaries, general and specialized: spelling dictionaries, technical dictionaries, etymological dictionaries, general encyclopedias, periodical literature, and many Latvian speakers. Of the latter, I want to single out the contribution of the late sea captain, Inats Lejnieks. In his time, the captain had commanded full-rigged sailing ships with Latvian crews, and he supplied the Latvian equivalents of the names of sails and principal ropes, spars, and part of the hull. I was fortunate to have captain Lejnieks share his expertise with me as this material was not available anywhere else.

$18.94
